The Banks of the Roman Empire Strangely enough, the first scheme of saving in the Roman Empire was not evolved for the patricians, but for the slaves. A place of safe keeping was established where the slaves might deposit their meager savings little by little, until they had accumulated enough to purchase their freedom. In the revolution of historic cycles this system lives today in the Christmas savings and Vacation savings plans, under which, mite by mite, people deposit their money that it may be protected from thoughtless spending and saved to buy the realization of a hope. Our Fletcher Savings Club carries the Christmas and Vacations savings plans still further. It provides for 50 weeks of regular saving of small amounts, starting any day in the year. During the cold weather they stand on one foot in the warm sunshine on the south side of the stable with their bills tucked under their wings, dreaming of the good old days of last summer when they chased the sad-voiced grasshopper and frolicked in the frog pond. ... % The members of the Hog Ford Church were late last Snnday, as they kept waiting for the bill to ring Sim Flinders, whose Job It Is to ring the bell, says he done his full duty and rung It, but as somebody had stole the clapper out of the bill, nobody could hear It.
