CONSERVATION IS DEBT TO FUTURE State Bulletin Hits Waste of Resources. ■Conservation Is comparatively new In this country because ours Is a virgin continent and we were blesaed with an abundance of native wealth,” says a bulletin of the State department of conservation. "However, we have been prodigal and failed to nourish or properly cere for this great endowment. Reckless extravagance and frequent despoliation seem to have tbeen the order of things. “For 100 years we have been destructive instead of constructive, until at last there was an awakening and conservationists realized that native wealth, seemingly inexhaustible, was in danger of disappearing unless care and precaution were employed in the spending. The great war, with its unprecedented de.mand for production in both agriculture and Industry, hastened the awakening from a stupor brought on by too much wealth. “Conservation and judicious utilization, together with perpetuation and propagation of those renewable resources, are ▼ltaly essential in order that this great Nation maintain its lead among nations of the world. The time is here for prompt and intelligent action In conserving and using wisely what remains of our native wealth. It is Indeed criminal to delay. The perpetuation of our resources and conservative utilization constitute a debt we owe the present generation as well a those of the future.” CLOSED SEASON FOR TAKING FISH New Law Designed to Conserve Species. With the passage cf a bill by the Legislature and signed by the Governor enacting a closed season on fishing in Indiana, the State department of conservation is beseiged with letters from persons al\ over the State inquiring as to what measure out of several proposed really became a law. The law in question prohibits fishing for black bass and blue gills from April 80 to June 16, during the spawning season. and makes It unlawful for any person to have either of these species of fish in their possession during the aforementioned period. Some confusion exists as to the exact dates set down in the new law as the bill which created it Is a part only of the original bill introduced by Representative James. The James bill called for a closed season on nearly all species of fish from May 15 to July 1. The bill, as finally passed, is a combination of H. B. 42 and H. B. 4, and was drafted by George N. Mannfeld. superintendent of the division of fish and game of the conservation department. This bill carried an emergency clause and the law Is now in effect. Governor McCray having signed the bill. “Passage of this bill,” says Mr. Mannfeld, “Is a marked step forward In conserving two very valuable species of fish inhabiting Hoosier waters. For several years conservative sportsmen worked at each legislative session for the enactment of a closed season protecting the bass during the nesting period. Passage by this Legislature is the culmination of many years, work by sportsmen all over Indiana who advocated the measure and educated the selfish angler to its necessity.”
