BRANCH BANK BILL PASSED IN SENATE 34 TO 12 Would Restrict Activities in Neighborhood of Other Institutions. LOCAL INTEREST SHOWN After a bitter fight In which 9trong lobbies on both sides played a large part, the Senate yesterday afternoon passed the branch bank bill which, as it now stands, prohibits the establishing of branch banks in the “immediate neighborhood” of institution* already established. The vote w*s 84 to 12. The bill as originally introduced provided that no State bank or trust company should establish branch banks, but on second reading the amendment providing they shall not be established in the ' Immediate neighborhood" of other banks was Inserted on motion of Senator C. Oliver Holmes, Gary. The vote on the bill follows: Ayes—Adams, Alldredge. Arnold. Bainum, Baiter, Bowers, Brown, Buchanan, ann. Cleveland, Decker. Dunn, English, Fitch, Hartzell, Hays, Hepler. Hegsrcn. Kiper, Kline, Leonard, Lindley, McConaha. McCullough, Maler. Masters, Meeker, Miller. Moorhead, Nejdl, Self. Southworth. Steele. Swain. Noes Beardsley, Behmer, Cravens, Douglass, Duncan, Holmes. Humphreys, Nichols, Ratts. Richards. Strode. Tagne. On the opening of debate Senator Joseph M. Cravens moved that the bill be recommitted to a committee to consider farther the Holmes amendment. Senator Holmes agreed on the ground that the amendment is •‘indefinite.’’ The movement appeared to be intended to delay action on the bill until adjournment, but it was lost. The next move to kill the bill came from Senator Don F. Strode. Kokomo, when he moved that it be indefinitely postponed. After a number of protests. Senator Alfred Hogston, Marion, moved that the motion be tabled. This latter motion was carried with a vote of 26 ayes, the notes not being recorded. It was brought out in the course of a long debate that the bill was aimed directly at a condition existing in Indianapolis, but a number of Senators pointed out it would have a State-wide application. Practically every bank in Indianapolis Is lined up on one side or the other of the controversy and every effort is being made to get the bill through the House *s it is, on the one hand, or on the other hand to have it killed there. , TEXAS FIRST IN CROP VALUES.
