OPTIMISM KEY TO ‘BEST EVER’ MOTOR SHOW (Continued From Page One.) and State—even though some people hav* an Idea that the Industry Is a dead on#. Far from being dead, the members o< the local trade association Are more optimistic thig year than ever before They are preparing to spend moreimoney thil year than ever. The show will be more elaborate In decorations, which will eosl much more money than ever before' The Illumination will be Just twice what it has ever before been. Physically, then, the show is certain to be a stem-winding tv hopper. There is Jnst one thing to overcome—*, the idea some- people have that they shouldn't be asked to pay even a small admission fee to see something that some other fellow has to sell. There are several good reason* why they should be willing to put up th five dimes necessary for admission, which said ten jitneys also Include the war tax. In the first place, let the public think of the great saving In time In being able ro see all the autos under one roof — and all dolled up and looking their bast, TIME-SAVING IN COMPARISONS. Think of the time saved In making comparisons of various care within # (ertain price'range. Time Is worth dollars and these dollars may be saved la visiting the auto show. If the prospective show visiter Is net a prospective automobile buyer now It is almost cerjaln he has the prospect back in the rear of his head that some day, perhaps in the next few weeks o t months, he may decide to buy a car. Even If the visitor has neither the means nor the inclination to be an automobile owner In the next few months, there will be enough of beauty and enough of high-class music (with less 'a less Jazz this year) to make the visit to the show worth much more than the price of admission. Finally, and one of the strong reasons—a matter of civic pride. Here will be milllon-dollars-and-more exhibition staged by a million-dollar bunch of optimists, representing an Industry that has a vital part in the business life of this community and this State. This industry Is preparing to toot most of the horns in the band wagon In the parade of progress and prosperity thal is now forming on Business Revival street, Just around the cornet. \Ye ail want to see this parade. We should want to honor the horn-tootera that are clambering Into the band wagon. We should, each one of us, be prepared to lend eyery encouragement to this most encouraging s'-gn of the times. A little pat oa the back, even, will b* appreciated. And those pats may take the form of the pat-a-pat flutter of admission tickets In the box at the doora during the week of March 7. Just look us over—don’t overlook uk
SAYS TYPHUS GERM SPREAD UNDER CHECK (Continued From Page One.) arriving here to pass a rigorous health examination before admission. This became effective today. Similar action was taken by the New Jersey health authorities In this port. “If typhus were permitted to get a foothold in Xew York the whole country would be exposed to the greatest plague In history, a situation beside which our recent influenza epidemics would be nothing," Dr. Copeland said. MORE DEADLY THAN INFLUENZA. “Next to the bubonic plague, typhus 1* the most dangerous communicable disease known. The death rate ranges from 20 to DO per cent; that of influenza is negligible in comparison. Should typhus get a start In this congested city there is little doubt it would claim a million victims before it was curbed. It would sweep across the country like a gigantic prairie fire. Industry and social life would be paralyzed. The country would become as a huge desert. Oue might estimate the possible deaths by the fact that typhus has claimed six millions la Russia alone in the last few months. "The common carrier of the disease is the typhus louse. But once the disease becomes epidemic. It appears to be communicable by almost any means. "We can avert the possibility of such a calamity befalling the country If we get together and stop this flood of immigration from central and southern Europe. Such a step, together with ordinary sanitary precautions, would eliminate danger we now face.” 34 CASES RtTOKTEI) FROM STEAMERS. The latest official reports showed thirty-four cases of typhus on newly arrived steamers from Europe, all of which have been segregated. Although the Federal governiqpnt has refused to embargo all immigration, as requested by Dr. Copeland, the New York City authorities announced they will not permit passengers to land until they have proven themselves uninfected and will hold* all steerage passengers until the steamship companies themselves have deloused them. This caused the liners Nieuw Amsterv dam, Finland and Mount Clay, which ars at sea, to be ordered by wireless to change their courses to Boston. Steerage passengers of the Duca D'Aosta, Ryndam and Lapland were still held on those ships at their docks here today, there being no room for them to land at Ellia Island. .'The liners Providence and San Guisto were dying off Hoffman Island, waiting for their immigrants to be deloused and examined there before pro, (■ceding to*dock. BOSTON TO ENFORCE RIGID EXAMINATION BOSTON, Feb. 12. —Immigration officials hero today said that a more rigid examination of immigrants would be made following reports from New York that several steamers had changed their courses and were headed for Boston to land their passengers here, thus didging New York restrictions against typhus. All immigrants will be detained at this port until there is no doubt of their freedom from disease, it was announced. Precautions similar to those started la New York will be put in operation. STEEL PLANT HIRING MEN. JOHNSTOWN, Pa., Feb. 12.—ThM business is rapidly approaching a normal stage was evidenced here this morning when the Cambria Steel Company announced the reopening of a number of departments which had been closed since last December. The order will affect several thousand men. LEGAL NOTICE. NqTICE.
