SEES NO HUMOR IN MUSSEL BILL Mannfeld Declares Protection Is Necessary. While some persons bare referred facetiously to Senate BUI No. 133, introduced by Senator Miller, for protection of mussels or clams In Hoosier maters, members of both houses, as well as citlrens mho have given the subject study, see merit in legislation to give the lowly clams a fair chance to Inhabit our streams, says George N. Mannfeld, superintendent of the division of tlsh and game of the State department of conservation. The mussel bill, which has passed the Senate and is recommended for passage in the House by Committee on Judiciary A, provides for a closed season between April 1 to July 1, during which it will be unlawful to take mussels from waters in Indiana. The reason of this closed season, Mr. Mannfeld points out, is the fact that game fish are nesting during this part of tie year and mussel digging disturbs and tears up the spawning ground of fish. The closed season will he as advantageous to the mussel Industry as it will be toward augmenting fish, since a stage of parasitism on the gills of fish Is necessary to mussels and the law would increase their number during the closed period. Conservation officials call attention to the fact tha mussel digging is a lucrative business and that this bill, appearing to some only in a humorous light, in reality means the continuation of a big industry in this State.
