SAYS FAILURE OF INDUSTRIAL COURT PROVED A. F. L. Secretary Cites Kansas Coal Strike to Uphold Contention. COMPULSION ISSUE UP WASHINGTON, Feb. B.—Frank Morrison, secretary of the American Federation of Labor, today declared the coal strike In Pittsburg, Kan., proved the failure of the idea on which the industrial court Is based. Approximately 200 miners quit work In Kansas in the face of an order not to 3trike,” Morrison said. ‘‘This shows you cannot compel men to work with the machinery of a court or any other form of compulsory arbitration. The strike demonstrates conclusively the contention of labor that constitutional means should be resorted to for the abolition of this court.” LEADERS KEEP IN CLOSE TOUCH. Leaders of labor are keeping In close touch with the Pittsburg situation where the industrial court Is conducting an Investigation to determine whether officials of the United Mine Workers’ Union issued written orders directing the men to quit work. This would be a violation of the court’s injunction against conspiracy. If officials of the union are convicted of having violated the Injunction they will be open to punishment by the court, either through jail sentences or fines, or both. Labor leaders here believe that should Imprisonment of local union leaders result from the investigation the situation will develop a national significance which may lead to drastic action by union men In all sections of United States. INTERESTED IN HARDING CHOICE. In this connection officials of the American Federation of Labor and the big international unions are interested in ! the problem that confronts President- | elect Harding in choosing anew head of the Labor Department. Appointment of James F. Davis, head of a big fraternal organization, as Secre- i tnry of Labor would bring little applause from labor, It Is indicated here. Labor regards Davis, a banker, as having an 1 outlook on industrial relations akin to ] that of men of wealth. The fact that Davis Is reported to have been at one time a member of a union would have little weight with the leaders here, although none of them havjr coma out frankly against him. “Labor,” said Secretary Morrison, “wants to see one of its best minds !n the position of Secretary of Labor Department.” Try Phosphate If You Are Thin And Underweight Nothing like Bitro-Phosphate. says Dr. Harrigan of New York, ro make thin, delicate, nervous, discouraged men and wernen take on needed weight and qul' kly exhibit a nerve force that radiates health, energy and ambition.
