REDISTRICTING TO TAKE TIME OF LAWMAKERS Congressional Reapportionment Will Give Indiana Twelve Representatives. With the passage by the National House of Representatives of the bill limr lting that body to its present membership and with the probability of its passage by the Senate, the interest of many members of the Indiana Legislature Is turning to the congressional reapportionment which must be completed at this session. Under the bill before the National Senato Indiana will have only twelve representatives. instead of thirteen, ind this will liece-ssitate twelve districts. With Indiana’s present population of 2,9.30.544, each district should hive a population of 244.212 to make the distribution of Representatives equitable. Under the bill passed by the House of Congress, each district in the Nation shall have 242,267 population. At the present time ten of the Indiana districts have a population of less than this number and In three the population exceeds this figure. With this state of affairs it appears to be hardly probable that any district will remain as it is now constituted. The three districts with populations of more than 242,267 are the Seventh (Marion County), with a population of 245.061; the Tenth, with a population of 286.3X7, and the Thirteenth, with a population of 287,751. The population of Marlon County is too large for one Representative under the proposed provisions and is too small for two Representatives. This probably will mean that a part of the county must be joined with some other county or counties to make a district. The question of where this dividing line will be placed, together with the questions of other district dividing lines. Is expected to absorb the attention of the Legislature for some time. The time for congressional reapportionment finds the Legislature overwhelmingly Republican. Therefore It is expected that every effort will be made to combine the counties in districts In such a way as

motion was never passed on by the judge. At the time these Indictments were retitrned It was charged that Brydon bad obtained $320 from Amelia Miller by falsely representing to li6r that he owned a newspaper called American Unity, In which a large number of political candidates had contracted to take advertising. On April 5, after the police had given out a statement In which she is alleged to have admitted throwing the aeld, she was arraigned and entered a plea of not guilty. That was the last entry made on the docket of Judge Collins in regard to Vina In the year 1920. CLAUDE HOUSTON was indicted for bigamy March 13 and called for trial Oct. 13. The record shows that the cause was then continued and that It was not disturbed again In the year 1920. Houston was accused of marrying an Indianapolis girl in July, 1917, when he was still possessed of a legal wife. MURATT M’DANIELS, accused of an unspeakable offense against a child of feeble mind, In an indictment returned June 12, tarried before Judge Collins on July 5 long enough to assure the court that he was not guilty. a record made in 1920 to show that his assurance was not to be Interpreted as final authority In the case. These are only a few of the cases that came under the classification of “unfinished business” on the Criminal Court docket for the year 1920. Back of each one, of course, there are “circumstances” that resulted In the failure of Justice to “carry on.” Judge Collins doubtless could explain why he did not act In these cases and whether he ever intends to act in them. The latter explanation would be of much interest to the defendants, who do not appear to be worrying in the least about the charges pending against them.
