OIL EXTRACTION PLANS OUTLINED Announcement is made by the conservation commission that an oil extraction plant will soon be installed in the department's laboratories for experimental purposes. According to I)r. W. N. Logan, geologist for the State department of conservati/n, the plant will lie a duplicate on a smaller scale of tha 8150.000 commercial plant which is to be erected in southern Indiana to demonstrate the possibility of the extraction or oil in commercial quantities from the New Albany shale. The experimental plant for the department is being installed by Louis S. Clarke of Ardmore, Pa., at hia own expense. Mr. Clarko advises the department that the work of installation will begin within the next few days. This will make the third process of extraction to lie tried by the division of geology of the conservation in Its work on oil shales. Two processes which have been tried are the lilgh-teinpornture distillation process and the wet process The new process will be a digestive low temperature process which, it is claimed by its inventor, will extract a largequantity of oil per ton than the. dry distillation method. Other advantages are also claimed for it. J. R. Reeves, assistant on the survey, who is investigating the oil-bearing possibilities of the New Albany shales ot Indiana, and who has already done, much field and laboratory work in connection with this line of investigation, will have charge of the new experimental process for the department. Previous experiments show that manj of the shales of Indiana possess an oil content from twenty-five to fifty-five gal ions of oil per ton of shale. Because of tlve rapidly diminishing supply of petro leuui and the Increased demand for oil for power and fuel, such Investigations are rendered Imperative.

THRIFT IS NOT MERE SAVING Judicious Spending Necessary to Keep Wheels Going. By 8. IV. STRAUS, President American Society for Thrift, The mistaken assumption often Is made that thrift means mere saving money. It is true that money saving is one of the chief fundamental functions of thrift, but a little thought will convince one that it is just as important that we exersise prudence in the conservation of our time, and conserve our health and energies as it is that we lay aside money. There must be a very marked distinction drawn between saving money and hoarding money. The miser is a menace to progiess. There are business concerns that have failed to make advancement” because of the miserly or ultra-conserva-tive practices of their directing executives. The same ia true of towns and communities. There must be spending to keep the wheels of industry turning. Just at the present time in this country there is a widespread wave of retrenchment which has brought about the closing down of factories to such an extent that between two and three million working people are out of employment. ■While this is a temporary manifestation which will right itself In the coarse of time, it serves to illustrate the tremendous effect which the mental attitude of the public may have on business conditions. True thrift brings progress both personally and as a nation. The saving or earning money at the serious sacrifice of one’s health is not real thrift. To save money also thror^flithe development of ha'oirs tflat are so narrow and miserly that they arrest oue development and make us a stumbling bloek in the pathway of our fejlowmen is not within the meaning if real thrift. True thrift is a character tonic. The man who indulges in these practices not only grows more independent i% a material way, but is better equipped mentally, morally and physically to taka his rightful place in the progressive at-T fairs of the world. Every possible encouragement should be given those who are starting out this new near with the determination of sav-;' lng money and getting ahead, but they, should bear in mind at the same time that thrift it not limited merely to the saving of money. Progress, success and happiness wiit come to those who husband their financial resources. If they are equally thrifty in matters of time, health and energy their; progress and success will be proportionately more satisfactory. Generally speaking, the saving o£ money leads to the development of kin-* dred virtues, but it is not amiss to bear In mind continually that real thrift means vastly more than simply putting' money aside for a rainy day.
