BEVERIDGE IN ADDRESS FLAYS REPEAL MOVE (Continued From Pare One.) convenient places was advanced as an objection bj Mr. Beveridge. “There is not a fraction of'publicity given convention-delegate primaries," he declared, “that is given the popular nominating primaries. Everything bap pens, whether accldenally or by design, to discourage the citizen from attending the Indirect sham primary, whereas everything transpires to encourage the citizen to attend the direct genrine primary. The location Is sometimes ve-y suddenly changed. There Is only formal and Inconspicuous publication of the day, hour and place. “It Is as certain as human nature that v. omen will not search out and go to these inconvenient, concealed, disagreeable, make-believe, part frame-ups to help elect pre-arranged slates of convention delegates who are then manipulated so as to nominate the party candidates selected by the party machine s managers.' “It s Indeed fortunate for the women . f Indiana that almost the first thing that challenges you after your emancipation is a tet of your political intelli■ence and civic integrity,** declared th* former Republican Senator, pointing out that “this test” is the plan to abolish the primary. “A raa'l group of men whose sole an-1 exclusive business Is party manipulation will name for whom you must vote on election day by the convention system and your newly acquired and hardwon suffrage can be used only to ratify nominations ly party bosses whose power now great'y and most rightly Impaired by the primary, will he restored In full vigor,” he declared. nnnsk and IPX-AIJ VISF.I). Mr. Beveridge declared that he would much prefer being a "fool than a hypocrite," saying that he earnestly hoped that “this unwise, ill-advised and rightly unpopular proposition to abolish or at least mutilate the direct nominating primary and restore the discredited nominating convention, will not be further pressed In Indiana.” “Those who are determined that the sememe shall never be put through are fully armed and prepared to take the field agairißt all comers." he continued. “We are resolved to carry the fight to the people and to keep fighting until this historic advance of popular representative government is secure.” Mr. Beveridge disposed of the popular objection t the direct primary on account of large expenditures of manes' by the candidates by saying that the law does not require the office-seeker to spend an inordinate amount or any amount of money, further painting out that “it i* the candidate who does the spending and not the law that forces him to spend.” ‘The power of corrupt wealth In politics is Infinitely weaker today under the

His record shows: Days clear and bright, 169; days partly cloudy, 60; days cloudy, 110; days of rain, 53; days of snow, 16; days of mow on ground, 33. Mr. Beveridge predicted the publication | of a “volume'' upon the expenditure of ■ corrupt money during the indirect prl- : marv system with the statement that ! "these good men who now oppose the I primary and champion the convention I will be sorry that they have been be- \ gulled into such a stand; while those ; who evilly plot for the restoration of I evil methods will be fixed forever In the pillory of public scorn, for the money spent under the primary, although most of jt needlessly and stupidly squandered, is but a tithe of the vast amount habitually employed under the convention system.” Mr. Beveridge pointed out thnt he is only sounding the “gentle beginning of i our fight.” “At this time all can agree to at least this principle,” he said. “No fundamental measure affecting the popular rights adopted after years of discussion and experiment, should ever be repealed except by submitting to the final judgment of i the people at the ballot law," BEGILAR JOB. “And what might your work have been during the late war?" asked an old lady visiting the Atlantic fleet. OPPOSES NEW PARTLOWTRIAL Evans Argues Against Precedent for Garage Owner. Declaring that it would be dangerous for Judge James A. Collins of Criminal Court to create a precedent by granting anew trial to John L. Partlow, local garage owner, fined SIOO and sentenced to from one to fourteen years on a charge of receiving stolen automobiles, on the ground that Carl Bernaeur now admits in an affidavit that he gave false testimony against Pnrtlow, in the face of a decision of the State Supreme Court upholding the verdict of the trial court. Prosecutor William P. Evans vigorously opposed today a motion of Purtlow hnsed on the ancient coram nobis procedure. Prosecutor Evans contended that if this practice was allowed by the court any person who is found guilty by a jury could come into court and by the means of possible false affidavits obtain anew trial. "If this procedure is permitted there will be no end to a case," lie said. Mr. Evans contended that Bernauer’s testimony during the trial was not the only evidence against Partlow and that I the jury was the sole judge of the evidence and the credibility of the witnesses. Edward Fitzpntrick and Attorneys Christian and Walt* of Hamilton County made the arguments for Partlow. Judge Colling took the petition under advisement until Wednesday morning. The court indicated that there was doubt In his mind whether a judge has the power to grant anew trial after the Supreme Court has affirmed the trial court decision. Indications are that the Marlon County grand jury is preparing to decide whether Bernauor should be indicted on a perjury charge. BOOZE SHIT SEIZED.
