Otto Strodel of Ft. Wayne, president, presided at the meeting, and Harr> I.owcnthal, chairman of the Evansville convention committee, presented the en tertainment plans of the Evansville Elks. A special train of Hoosier Elks will leave by way of Chicago for the national grand lodge convention at Los Angeles the week of July S. The following transportation committee was appointed: Harry Knight. Elkhart; Robert A. Scott, Linton, and Thomas G. Hedlan, Indianapolis. Plays ‘Peek-a-Boo’ With Police; Pinched Thomas Gee, 42, of 712 Madison avenue, may have been playing ••peek-a-boo” with the police last night at East and Stevens streets, but he was arrested just the same. Gee, according to the police, was hiding behind a telephone pole where he was discovered by Sergeant Deeter and bis squad who arrested him on the charge of vagrancy and carrying concealed weapons. Gee had a "blackjack" In his pocket, the police allege. Terre Haute Man Will Be Optimist Guest Dr. William W. Parsons, Terre Haute, will address the Optimist Club Friday. Dr. Parsons bas been president of the State Normal School for thirty-five years. He is an interesting speaker, a good golf player and a real optimist. His theme will be taken from the three well-known rules of golf, viz: ‘‘Keep your eye on the ball; don't press und keep sweet.” These rules will be applied to the game of life. Employers Organize for Open Shop Fight CHICAGO, Jan. 13—Employers of twenty-two States were on record today to fight for the open shop until the finish. At the meeting of industrial leaders, called by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, committees were named to outline a comprehensive campaign to establish the open shop in all industries. Muncie Doctor Heads Registration Board Dr. W. A. Spurgeon of Muncie has beer, elected president of the State board of medical registration and examination. Dr. W. T. Gott of Crawfordsvllle has been re-elected secretary. Other officers re-elected are Dr. E. M. Shnnklln of Hammond, vice president, and Dr. Paul R. Tindall of Greensburg, treasurer. Miss Lucy Campbell of Indianapolis, was reelected clerk of the board

TAX WOULD NET STATE $300,000 Figures Worked Out on Basis of Oil Inspection Reports for Last Year. The plan of Senator Lee J. Hartzell f Ft. Wayne to place a tax of % of a cent a gallon on gasoline and kindred oroducts used for engine fuel for the purpose of raising a fund for the use of he State eonservation department for the purchase of State parks and the propagation of fish and game would net the State more than 1300 000 a year on the basis of figures on file in the office of the oil Inspection division of the food and drug department. During the fiscal year ended Sept. 30. 1920. vhe oil inspection division Inspected 2.521,428 barrels or 126,071.300 gallons of gasoline, benzine, naptha and kinlred products, not including kerosene. On this basis the proposed tax would have netted $315,178.50. Dealers in these products already are paying approximately 4 cents for each fifty-gallon barrel for their inspection. This, In addition to the proposed tax, woubl give the State a revenue in the neighborhood of 1-3 of a cent on every gallon of gasoline sold In Indiana.
