INMAN CONFERS WITH HARDING State Chamber of Commerce Head Invited to Discussion With President-Elect. B. R. Inman, manager of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce, left here today for Marlon, Ohio, to eolfer with President-elect Harding on proposed congressional action affecting business and agriculture. Mr. Inman is the first Indiana business man who has been invited to confer with the President-elect on legislative matters. The conference will be held tomorrow morning. Senator New, Will H. jHays, Republican national chairman, and '■ tx-Senator Albert J. Beveridge also have j Conferred with Harding. The Indiana State Chamber of Com- | : aerce is said to be one of the strongest 1 i ommercial organizations west of the . Oleghenies and this fact is thought to lave induced Harding to invite its nct- ! ng head for a conference. Warding hears kahn i >y military affairs MAF.ION, Ohio, Jan. 7.—Ruffle of j < rums and flourish of trumpets were . ( lp carded today in favor of earnest dis- < Ussiou when the future eommander-in- < hies of the Army of the United States < onsidered the efficiency and welfare of 1 he men soon to be under his direction. I enator Harding went exhaustively into she military policy of the country with Representative Julius Kahn, chairman ol’ the House Military Affairs Committee. Representative Kahn, it is understood, placed before the President-elect the plans of the majority in Congress for cutting down the expense of the Army and outlined the extent to which he thought the enlisted forces could be reduced without danger to national defense. Senator Harding, it is known, expects that economy can be attained and is Insistent that it must be obtained without danger to the nation. In discussing preparedness with officers who saw service 1n France, he announced that he intended t oappoint a Secretary of War who would be capable of producing results desired. The delegation, which consisted of Lieut. Col. Nobel B. Judah, Col. Horatio B. Haekett, Lieut. Col. Thomas Hammond, Col. Henry J. Reilly, all of Chicago, and Col. Karl Klemm of Kansas City, urged on the President-elect that he reduce the term of enlistment in the Army from three years to one. This policy, they said, would turn out into civil life approximately 150.000 trained men a year. They also advised compulsory military training, but it is asserted that Senator Harding himself favors a system of voluntary training. Madison County Farmer Succumbs Special to The Times. There is nothing confusing about the telephone directory change
In the Manual (Old) telephone directory for January, now being distributed, there are very few changes in the former listings. Only numbers that contained fewer than four figures have been altered in any manner. Although central office names are printed with the first two letters capitalized they are to be spoken as before. was revealed that the “estate” consisted of $2 in cash, which Auther left his wife when he disappeared. This bequest is exhausted and Mrs. Auther and her child are destitute. Philip Franzen, chief decorator at the University of Wisconsin, charges that Auther, after forcing him to sign away his wife at a pistol’s point, likewise compelled him to contribute SIOO to the couple's traveling expenses. While Mrs. Franzeu went to get the check cashed, Franzen declares, Auther kept him covered with the pistol. Franzen declared he believed Auther’s story that he had married Mrs. Franzen thirteen years ago in Australia and had had been seeking her in all parts of the world since she left him eleven years ago, was a hoax invented by the couple

The deserted wife and the deserteu husband are in something of a forgiving mood. Mrs. Auther Baid sne would UUtt her husband back if she could find him. Franzen said that for the sake of his child he “probably would forgive her.” Authorities believe Auther and Mrs. Franzen may be hiding somewhere near Chicago. Franzen thinks they may have gone to Philadelphia. Mrs. Auther says she believes they have gone to California or to Europe.
