Senator McKellar oj Tennessee, today urged in the Seuats that steps bo taken to restrict ownership in American fields producing oil for export to citizens of the United States. tVhile Great Britain is attempting to secure control of the world's oil supply, more than 60 per cent of the oil produced for world consumption is being produced, in tho United States, McKellar pointed out. “While tho oil supply of other nations is being conserved ours is being used and it will not be long until we are called upon to call upon other nations for our oil supply,” McKellar declared. Figures were quoted by the Tennessee Senator to show that Great Britain Is now dependent upon the United States for its oil supply. He advocated means to force the nations to refrain from entering into agreements for the control of oil supplies to the exclusion of tha United States. BORROWS TRUCK FOR CITY’S USE Agent Follows Times’ Suggestion With Quick Results. Half an hour after it had been suggfsted to him that a suitably equipped truck might be borrowed from some : local business concern temporarily to | leplace the ash-hauling tractor truck : uow in the repair shop, City Purchasing Agent Dwight S. Ritter made arrangements for such a loan yesterday and tha | truck was to be placed in service at ! once. The board of pnblic works had announced it could giva no assistance tn the ash-collection department until the city council ratified the contract for tha purchase of two White five-ton tractor trucks to be added to the department's equipment. The board desires one of the trucks to pull anew unit of ash trailers and -the other to be held in reserve in times of emergency, such as that novr created by the breakdown of a truck. ANTICIPATES RATIFICATION. The council several weeks ago refused to ratify the White truck contract, which was with L. H. Colvin, local agent for the truck company, some of the members stating that they did not like tho way in which the contract was negotiated. The board of works is confident it can get a ratification if the contract is sent to the council now because Mayor Charles W. Jewett seized control of the body in the annual election of officers Monday night. W hen President George Lemaux of thk board announced the intention to send (he contract to the council again he was asked why it was that a truck had not been temporarily borrowed to replace the broken one. He replied that the ash hauling work requires a truck with a specially reinforced frame and with a special coupling device with which to draw trailers. He said it would be Impossible to borrow such equipment and that the only hope of relief was for the council to get busy and ratify the White truck contract. FOLLOWS TIMES’ SUGGESTION. Despite this statement, Ritter had no difficulty in borrowing a truck which he says will do the work of the disabled one until the latter is repaired. The suggestion that this be done was made by the Times. Experienced truck men say that if tho board of works really desires to avoid the expenditure of at least half of the $9,000 price of the two White trucks it might easily do so. Granting that the board needs one of the trucks to pull an additional unit of trailers to meet the needs due to the growth of the city, it is not in accordance with good business principles, truckmen declare, to have an extra truck lying idle just to be ready in case of emergency when, as Mr. Ritter demonstrated yesterday, it is not at all difficult temporarily to hire a machine. The best economy in the hauling business is not to have trucks lying idle but to have all of them busy, men in the business assert, so an auxiliary truck for the ash hauling department would be ao much expensive dead weight. ■
