Catch Alleged ‘Con’ Man After Airplane Battle MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 23.—Machine guna mounted in an airplane manned of the Uoyal Canadian police and private detectives riddled an airplane driven by Joseph H. Gadbury, alleged American confidence man, forcing him to laud near Winnipeg and resulting in his capture, Minneapolis police learned tou-o. Gadbury is wanted in Britt, la., on (barges of forger) and obtaining money under fa.se pretenses, police say. The suspect is a former aviator and saw service in the World War. At Britt he induced farmers to subscribe approximately SIB,OOO to build a proposed airplane factory, ponce say. After passing $1,390 In worthless checks, be is alleged to have started 'by airplane for Winnipeg. At Emerson. Minn., he was forced to land. Private detectives, reaching Winnipeg, learned of liis accident near Emerson. Securing cooperation of the Canadian police they started out in an airplane to effect his capture. LOOANSPOKT, Ind., Dec. 23.—“ Light Keeper Can’t Take Bride to Summer Homo in Lake Erie,” are the headlines carried in a Toledo paper, together with a front page picture of Mrs. Viola Gummow of Logansport, and Herman Sclroeder of Toledo, who were recently married. Mrs. Qmmnnw has resided in this city for many years and was in the employment of the Logansport Pharos-Tribune as a collector. The To.edo paper has the following concerning the marriage: “Here’s a romance of the lakes —one of those romances that suggests nor’easters. perilous trips to the shore, lonely vigils in a lighthouse cower, and plenty of time to think—and dream.” Sehroeder is one of the keepers of Harbor Light and last summer he Spent all his spare moments wooing Mrs. Gummow. who was visiting her sister in Toledo. Government regulations do not permit women at the Toledo bnrbor light and Schroeder will be compelled to furnish a home in the city for his bride and visit her during the summer when he can get permission to leave his island domicile. Mrs. Gummow was the plaintiff in a damage suit againat the city of Loganßpert some time ago and was awarded the sum of SB,OOO for the loss of her former husband who was killed while In the employ of the local telephone company.

RtISHVILLE, Ind., Dec. 23.—Henry Alrop and Jesse Winkler, both charged with renting a building for gambling purposes, took a long chance here Wednesday when their case came to trial, and requested a jury composed of women. After deliberating forty-five minutes, the women decided the, two men were guilty and Imposed a fine of? 10 and cost* against each. The case was heard In police court and was the first case in which women have acted as ju rors In this city. Aisop and Winkler were implicated In connection with thirty-eight affidavits filed here last week, when John C. Hokey confessed to losing a large, sum of money In a “craps” game at the "Yellow Dog,” a soft drink parlor. The two men in this case were purported to be the owners of the building. .Most of the thirty-eight eases have been disposed of, with fines ranging from $3 to $25 on different charges.
Farmer Kills His Family With Hammer YORK. Neb. Dec, 23.—Carl E. Nicholson, a farmer, living nine mi’os west of here, killed his wife and three children with a hammer and then committed suicide by slashing his throat with a razor. The bodies were found by neighbors today.

Judge Walter Pritchard today was unable to decide if Cora Lydle, 418 East Merrill street, was guilty of having stolen $l7O from Clara Coulter, 518 Fletcher avenue, and he continued the case until Dec. 30, that the detective* might make further Investigation. Prosecutor Kalph stated that “no court on earth would convict the Lydle woman on the evidence offered today, and I will make an apology to this court for using two hours of its time a i the State has no more evidence to offer.” Detectives Rodamaeber and Peats presented evidence that tney had searched the Lydie womans apartments and found a receipt showing she baif paid sl2 for ,i cha:*' and a so mat tney ieurn-'d that she had deposited SIOO in a bank. Mail Handled Here Shows Gain Over 1919
The number of sacks of mail handled by the Indianapolis office yesterday was 39.G9 per cent greater than for the same date in 1919, Postmaster Robert E. announced. Yesterday 10,883 sacks were received and dispatched. On Deo. 22, 1919, 7.791 were handled. A 16.39 per cent increase in first-class mail sent through the cancelling machines also wa noted. The number of pieces put through the machines yesterday was 569,710, while a year ago the total wa 180,880. The increase in number of pieces was 78,830.
Grand Jury to Make Final Report Friday
The Marion County grand jury will make its final report Friday for this term of court and will ask to be discharged from further service. Anew grand jury will be empaneled on Jan. 1 for the new term of court opening on that day. The grand Jury is expected to make a report on the several county institutions The Jurors have visited Julietta, the jail and the poor farm this week. It Is tomnry for the grand jury to submit a report and recommendations on the management of county institutions in the final report of that body.
Report German Loan Being Sought in U. S.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 23.—The State Department has been approached informally regarding the possibilities of the floating of a loan, of $1,000,000,000 for Germany in the United States, it was announced today. William Walter Brauer, an American of New York, it is understood, is conducting negotiations for a group of German bankers. with the sanction of the German Governfaieut, to determine whether it will be. possible to establish a credit of $1,000,000.000 for Germany in this country, either through private bankers or through the Government.
Founder of Winona Assembly Drops Dead
Special to The Times. WINONA LAKE, Ind., Dec. 23.—Dr. Solomon C. Dickey, for many years director of the Assembly summer school here, and ex-president of Albion College, at Albion. Mich., dropped dead at his n inter residence at De Land, Fla., last night, after a day at ?olf. according to dispatches received here today. Dr. Dickey founded the Winona religious assembly, one of the most popular •n the country, in 1892.

Arnstein Case Goes to Jury Late Today WASHINGTON, Pec. 28.—The case of Jules (Nicky) Arnstein and three assistants. charged with conspiracy to bring stolen bonds into the District of Columbia, will go to the jury late today in Justice Gould's Criminal Court. When court reconvened the prosecution resumed its summing up arguments. Defendants counsel was allowed one hour and a half to present Its arguments. Justice Gould 4lid not expect to be able to charge the Jury until after the noonday recess. OFFICIAL ASKS FOR RECEIVER. Petition for the appointment of a receiver has been filed in Superior Court, room 4, by Arthur O. Wanger against the Electric Gas Welding Company, Inc., of this city. Wanger says the company Is Indebted to him In the sum of $l4O and that If a receiver is not appointed machinery and equipment totaling nearly $2,000 will be dissipated.
