OLCOTT SINGS OLD FA VORITES IN ‘ MACUSHLA ’ Percy Bronson Appears as Male Vamp in Lait’s Comedy—LeVan at Park

When Ireland Is mentioned nowadays perhaps the flrst thought that comes Is of hard-hitting shillalnhs and fast-flvlnc jjrlckbats. But there Is another Ireland, the Ireland of.the fairies, and the shamrocks, and Blarney. That Is the Ireland of "Macushla,” In which Chauncey Olcott la atarring at English's this week. When we say Chauncey Olcott Is starring we must needs mention In the same breath Allyn Glllyn, who is just as truly a star as Olcott, though she Is not billed that way. As Patricia Boyer of the play she Is the true “wild Irish rose'' and a more loveable rose could not be Imagined. The romantic play is Interspersed with by Olcott, real old Irish songs, which add a great deal to the perform cnee. The story is laid seme years back, t least far enough back that the gentlemen wore lace neckpieces, and it Is indicated when the hero decides to go to America that he Is one of the few Irish thinking of making the move. The story centers around Sir Brian Fitzgerald, played by Olcott. who has lately come into an impoverished es-

There are attempts on the part of the owner of another horse to put the Irish horad lout of the race. Os course, this effort [does not prove successful, and the race ■is won. The race scene, by the way, ktopped the show and Olcott was comkaUed to make a speech before the curWRn while the audience asked for Miss Glllyn, who did not appear. Underlying this plot is the romance of Sir Brian and Patricia, who has been raised as a boy and retains many boyish traits, but who later becomes truly s woman. Patricia Is the daughter of s tenant on the estate, but social differences are forgotten In the course of true love. That Is about the substance of this pretty bit of the romance of the Ireland we like to think of. In addition to the acting of the two leading characters, the splendid character acting of Joule Claflin as Mrs. Boyer and of John Ham llton as Dlnney O’Mara. the ostler, must not be overlooked. The remainder of the cast is ordinary. The engagement closes Wednesday' l ight at English's. . * -!- -!- -!- OH, LA! LA! PERCY’. HE WEARS A LACE COLLAR Listen, my children, and you shall hear a terrible thing. The men in 1370 will wear lace collars and lace cuffs and they will murmur while In the pangs of such voluptuous expression as a bunch of rhubarb.” Percy Bronson utters that expression snd s bunch of similar ones with Winnie Baldwin In “Visions of 1070“ by Jack Lalt, which Is one of the features at B. F. Keith’s this week. ** Lalt In this nutty affair permits the man to be the “female” of the house and the woman to be the head of the house. Bronson has a bunch of violet-tinted expressions which he uses to the rather lively Winnie. The “wise ones” get the act from the beginning but Bronson has to “educate” the old-fashioned ones who are not accustomed to hear men addressed as "Sister." After you get Into the spirit of Lait's nuttery, you will like this overdrawn attempt to amuse you and when this clever team has taken their last bow yon will agree that It is rapid and new nonsense. The entire affair is well done. Emma Carus la the headliner on the bill and she Insists on doing a monologue concerning baseball and the Democratic administration. While she Is doing the regular Emma Carus "stuff" she Is head and shoulders over all of them, but, Emma, for the love of Mike, keep off that baseball stuff. Dance If you will but refrain from the monologue.

Any Indianapolis father who refuses to take his children this week to the Lyric should be indicted on a charge of cruelty. The act of merit on the bill Is the Beatrice Morrell Sextette, composed of six highly trained women soloists and Instrumentalists, who have tho courage to present opera selections. The act Is probably too clasaical for popular vaudeville, but good music would win In a thunder storm and this sextette wins on a bill crowded with Jazz music. The Four Casting Campbells have for years, been a recognized aerial act and their work this sens in Is as meritorious ns In past seasons. McCormick and Wlnehlll offer a "nut” act called “Just for a Laugh.” Wlnehill is clever and McCormick Is a satisfactory foil for the “nut” expressions of his partner. Le Van and two other men, known as The Three Sensation Syncopaters. have the ability to stop proceedings with a “nut" musical act. Le Van Is a wizard on the piano and the banjo-ukelele. While these three men are on the stage they dispense chatter and melody of the type which causes an audience to demand more. Le Vnn believes in giving his audience what they want and he is working fcls head off this season. We thought the Lena Dailey show set the pace, but "The Big Sensation" goes beyond the Dailey show.
