REPORTS GAIN IN COAL SITUATION Operators’ Association Sees Relief in Fuel Shortage. _ Special to The Times. w TERRE HAUTE. Ind., Dec. 20.—The coal situation In Indiana Is rapidly improving, according to a statement Issued by the Indiana Bituminous Coal Operators’ Association. The statement says: “Reports received here during the last week indicate that the domestic coal sit nation In all the territory served by In dlana mines is being rapidly relieved am. coal dealers are able to get all the fuel they want. This Is particularly true in Indiana, where the Injunction granteo by the United States District Court In favor of the Vandalla Coal Company and the Vigo Products Company and enjoining the State food and fuel eommlsrnlslon from Interfering with their business, bas resulted in the dlvers'on of a tremendous amount of coal, that for- j merly was forced out of the State into j the bins of Indiana retailers. Figures , compiled by the Indiana Coal Trade Bu- j reau for the United States Geological Survey show that for the week ending ’ Dec. 11, there were shipped into Indiana for domestic use 1.737 cars of coal, as against 1,102 cars for the week ending Nov. 13. _ | “There also was a slight increase for . **he week ending Dec. 11 over the week ending Nov. 13 in the amount of coal taken by the railroads, but there was a decrease in the amount of coal used for steam purposes. The total shipments Into Indiana for the wee; ending Dec. 11 exclusive of the Chicago switching district were 6,390 cars, while for the week ending Nov. 13 the same district received 4,835 cars. The biggest increase, j of course, was in the amount of domes tic coal shipped, but there was an Increase of a little over 200 cars in the amount of fuel shipped to public utili- 1 ties. This indicates that a little over half of the coal mined In Indiana la going Into the State. The total shipments tot the week ending Dec. 11 were 12,474 cars. Other States received les coal from Indiana mines tor the week ending Dec. 11 than they did during the week ending Nov. 13. The demand for steam coal has been much less urgent thana it was a month ago, but lumi coal, particularly the grade suitable for domestic use, is finding a ready market In some instances at much lower prices than recently prevailed." * Riverside Thwarts Amusement Project The Riverside Realty Company has been formed as the result o K a protest by residents against the amusement park projected by the Riverside Amusement Company, which had purchased property between Parkway boulevard and Schurmann avenue and Twenty-Eighth and Twenty-Ninth streets, on which to build an amusement park. The Riverside Realty Company, which formed at a meeting of the River- ; aide Civic Association Saturday night, has obtained an option on this property, , and it is announced that the property Is on sale as a whole by the new realty company, or, if it Is not sold In the near future, it is the intention, to subdivide it Into lots and build homes on It. Charles J. Wacker is president of the company and the directors. In addition to Mr. Wacker, are William M. Swain, Karl F. Rommel, Howard S. Wilcox and George L. Turner.
