Humane Society to Aid Persons Wishing to Play ‘Santy * Many Calls for Assistance Come to Headquarters of Organization. Main 3949 means Christmas cheer for dozens of tots who, with their mothers, hare nearly been forgotten by Santa Clans this year. In other words, the Indianapolis Humane Society la acting us an agent for persons who wish to play “Old Santa” to the kiddles and their mothers, who will not hare any Christmas unless somebody makes It for them. Cooperating with the Humane Society, which Is doing its" work under the leadership of Miss Joseiphlne C. Meany. Is the Mothers' Aid Association, which has for Its goal “keeping the mother and the children together.” Cases which need assistance are cited to the Humane Society by the Mothers’ Aid, and help la obtained whenever possible. A special happy Christmas for one. family consisting of the widowed motlyr and sis little ones has been planner by three sisters who work In a downtown department store, through the agency of the society. The family will spend the day at the home of the sisters and will be given gifts which will keep them warm and toys which will make the children happy. MOTHER AND EIGHT ASK ASSISTANCE. However, calls for assistance are coming In with more rapidity than “Santa Clauses'’ can be provided. A mother living In Mars Hill has asked If somebody •would not give her eight children a little bit of Christmas.' Down on the south side, on Kelly street. In s tiny house, is a mother with three little girls who won't have any C hristmas this year. On Highland drive In a wee house Is another mother with four little ones, all less than 12, who are asking her if Santa Claus has “forgotten us.” Another mother living on McKim avenue, who la working in a downtown building, has told the Humane Society that she Is more than afraid that she won't be able to have a Christmas for her soar little ones this year. She added that this Is the first year that she has never beea able to do something for her “babies.” CAN’T BUY COAT, TO KEEP WARM. Out on Noble street Is a family composed of the mother, who is a widow, and four children, who are In dire need of assistance In the cold weather. A mother on Lawton street, who livea in a pitiably small honse with her five children, cannot buy coal to keep them warm, tbe society has been told. Calls for “Just a little help now because lt'a so cold” are on file In the Humane office from a mother with four children, living on Hosbrook street, one with three children living on Mlnkner street, one with two very small children living on Smith lane, one colored mother with four children living on Barnea avenue, one foreign mother with four children living on Ketcham street. Mias Meany declared that the need for Christmas help Is greater this year than It has ever been before on acount of i) high cost of living. “Mothers esn't even keep their children alive with proper focal, let alone pay the rent and clothe them during the cold weather. We would like to be able to give every family help, not only on Christmas day, but during all the year. But we can't even help them on Christmas. "Tbe reason that we cannot help those who deservingly need It. Is not because the people do not want to give to us, but because they do not realize that there are those In their very midst who deserve the assistance.” OLD INSPIRED TO GIVE NOW. Miss Meany said she believed that at thla time of the year all children dream about what Santa Claus will bring them, and older people get the spirit of giving. "There are hundreds of those without happy homes next week who, through some misfortune of fate or chance, bava been forced to abandon those things which have meant teal life, happiness and endeavor toward progress,” she said.

‘ With them all, however, Ungers the eternal hope that something will turn ont to make them happy. It Is this hope which we are trying to bring true.” Miss Meany pointed out that the society bears In mind that even In extreme Instances the mother should be helped to keep the children with her. She said that the Humane Society cocoperates only with such organisations which make it a point to help the children when they are with the mother, not insisting upon removing them to strange homes before giving assistance.
