DETROIT, Dec. 17.—Police today are patrollng the river in launches and Bearching' every island in the belief that Mary E. Caldwell, 18. missing since Wednesday, is being held captive in a deserted hut or bunting lodge on one of the islands of the lower Detroit river. A note, ier't by the missing girl in her kid glove, is the slender clew on which the police base their hope of solving the mystery. It read: “I am being taken away by four men in a boat. South Sea Maids Lure 2 Marines Into Unusual Adventure After Perilous Sea Voyage and Marriage American Youths Face Desertion Charge. WASHINGTON, Dec. 17.—Two South Sea maids, singing the siren song of their native tropical setting, have Just led a pair of American marines into in adventure that Included a perilous sea voyage, marriage and then arrest for desertion. Clifton, 22, of Winona, Minn., stationed in the Marine corps island at Guam. Offieiul records of the case showed that life in sleepy Guam had begun to pall on Dawson and Clifton. And then they met the two native girls—Chamorros they are called —with the luring complexion of case au lait and wearing grassy gowns that sway in the breeze. A motor boat was commandeered. The boat was stocked with provisions and all was set for the elopment. FIRE SCARE AT JAIL. MARION, Ind.. Dec. 17.— Prisoners in the county Jail were panic-stricken when the burning coils of tin electric motor caused the corridors and cells to fill with smoke. Sheriff Fowler removed the inmates to cells away from the burning motor. The Jail was not damaged by the fire.

Carolers Appear in Downtown District E. H. Kemper McComb ( principal of Emmerich Manual Training High School, ! today followed his usual Christmas custom of allowing the high school carolers to appear in the downtown district and sing Christmas hymns and songs to the crowds. At 11 o’clock today, twenty-five student musicians and singers, under the direction of Edward Holloway, teacher of English at Manual, appeared on the balcony floor of the Fletcher Savings and Trust Comhpany and gnve a concert that lasted half an hour and attracted hundreds of Christmas shoppers. All business at the trust company was suspended during the caroling.

MOSCOW, Dec. 17 (B.v wireless to Berlin). —A report from London today that United States Senator Medlli McCormick is conducting an unofficial investigation of European conditions for Presidentelect Harding and may undertake official negotiations aroused great interest among soviet officials. It led to the belief in some quarters that Senator McCormick may visit Moscow before his return home. (In an interview given at Geneva Senator McCormick said that he had gone to Europe on his own initiative to secure information for the use of his colleagues in the Senate. Zook fired twice in the air to stop Runkle. but when he refused to halt, a third shot lodged In his right hip.

OYSTER HOUSE 1 SOLD FOR $2,000 Thomas A. Riley Said to Be in on Deal. Announcement was made today by Attorney Fred Bonlflcld, administrator of the estate of the late Frank Rosseil, known as “Oyster Frank,” that the Frank Oyster House at 408 East Washington street, has been sold at public auction for $2,000. The MU of sale was made out to William Feeney, former city detective, but it is understood Thomas A. Riiey of the board of works, is a silent partner in the deal. The oyster house brought a higher price than the appraised figure. Interest In the estate of the late “Oyster Frank” now centers on a claim filed in the Marion County Probate Court by Mae Rosseil, who claims she is the common law wife of the deceased, and is entitled to a statutory allowance of SSOO. Judge Mahlon Bash has taken no action on the claim. It is said a number of suits may be filed before the estate Is settled. Mae Rosseil was one of the bidders at the sale of the oyster house. There is current talk that “Oyster Frank” secreted a large sum of money, but search has failed to reveal the hiding place, it is said.

CHAMBER URGES BUDGET SYSTEM Resolution Will Be Sent to Harding. A resolution urging the adoption of a budget system for the United States Government has been prepared by Charles F. Coffin, president of tho Chamber of Commerce, to be forwarded immediately to President-elect Warren G. Harding, and to the United States Chamber of Commerce, at Washington. The resolution is in accordance with action taken at the monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Indianapolis Chamber yesterday: The board of directors indorsed the plan of the Junior Chamber of Commerce to establish an employment and placement service for members of the Junior chamber and for other young men in the city.
