WOMEN TO ASK MEMBERSHIP ON MORE BOARDS Look to McCray to Give Them Representation in State Appointments. Hoosier women who have been active In politics for the past several years have taken hope that with the incoming State administration they will be more equally represented in membership on the various State commissions and boards of trustees of Indiana s charitable and correctional institutions. Especiallj are they hopeful that their sex will be recognized to a greater extent on governing boards of institutions wherein women are'the inmates. Under the Goodrich administration but nine women are members of boards of trustees of the States many institutions. These are the school for the blind, with two women on the board; board of charities, one woman; child welfare and social insurance commission, twp women; Indiana State sanitarium for treatment of tuberculosis, one woman, and the Indiana woman s prison, with four women representing the entire membership of the board. These women, with the dates of expiration of their commission, are Mrs. William A. Hough, Greenfield, school for blind, Jan. 1, 1922; Mary A. Spink, Indianapolis, board of charities, March 10, 1922; Vida Newsom. Columbus, child welfare commission. March 1, 1921; Mrs. A! bion Fellows lincon. Evansville, child welfare commission, March 1, 1921; Mrs. Nevada Duncab, Cloverdale, Indiana State Sanitarium, May 24, 1921; Mrs. Joseph B. Healing. Indianapolis, woman's prison, April 10, 1923; Charlotte J. Dunn. Indianapolis, woman's prison. April 10, Margaret Neely, Martins ville, woman's prison, April 10, 1923; Alice Wilkie Paynter. Sullivan, woman's prison, April 10, 1923. Several commissions of male members of the boards of trustees of these institutions. will expire in 192 L It is this fact that leads women to believe they will be recognized to a greater extent when the time comes for the, handing out of appointments. Commissions which will expire in 1921 are held by Thomas A. Clifton, Covington, School for the Blind, Jan. 1; Demarches Brown, Indianapolis. Foard of Charities. March 1; John 11. Holliday, Indianapolis, Board of Charities (commission now expired); Wilmer Christian, Indianapolis, Village for Epileptics, March lo; Charles Heustis, Greencastie, Indiana State Farm. July 7; Adolph Seidenaticker, Indianapolis, Board of Pardons, Jan. 1; Thomas E. Daily. Indian-polis. Board of Pardons, March 22; Joseph L. Bayard Jr., Vincennes, Southern Indiana Hospital for Insane, Jan. 1; E. S. Roberts. Madison. Southeastern Hospital for Insane, Aug. 1. It Is deemed highly probable that many of these men will be replaced with women. in addition to the appointment of women to succeeed those whose commissions will cap ire next year. Two facts give rise to these suppositions. The first rea>on is that Governor-elect McCray has Indicated that he desir.-s more women connected with the administration of State affairs, and In the ap pointment of Miss Ada Bush as his private secretary he hvs taken what Is considered a big step toward carrying out thia desire. The second reason is political exped’ ency. Republican politicians have no, been uumindful of the source of their great landslide into power in both State and Nation. They know that the won* en's votes elded materially in Republican success Nov. 2. And they know liki wise that the worn u are not going to be content "to .-it idly by for four ytnra just for the chance to again exercis their tight of franchise and not desir any of the political* spoils. They are going to demand a place U the State administration machinery, anare going to insist that they be hea.'ii

The politicians know that unless tho women are given some chfiice political plums they will voice their protest in four years in no unmistakable terms. An appointment tlMit has been pointed out as one that should go to a woman is that of a successor to Adolph Seidensricker on the board of pardons. This is one of the most logical places for a woman, it is said, because of the humane side of the board’s work. Some objection has been raised because it is said

a woman's heart is too easily moved, but the service of women on juries Is referred as a refutation o fthis argument. Women are going to demand greater representation on boards of trustees of institutions wherein women are Inmates. Protect the Children. INDIANA DAILY TIMES, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15,1920.

There are several of these places where women are confined, such as the various hospitals for the treatment of Insane. There are at least nine State boards on which women are not represented. These Include the boards for the Village for Epileptics, State Penal Farm, State Prison, Board of Pardons, Indiana Reformatory, Southern Indiana Hospital for Insane, Southeastern Hospital for Insane, Soldiers' and Sailors’ Orphans Home.
