If Elements Count, Stuck Studio Is an Ideal Home of Art Artist Tells of Success in Work by Doing What One Likes to Do,
Hidden away in a far corner In the hearts of most people is a little room to which the key has been thrown away, where the desires of the flush of youth’s dreams to become an artist have been fostered. Sometimes this dusty lodging is broken into years later and the aspiration taken out and brushed off la the form of tales to / amuse the grandchildren. Sometimes, though, these dreams are realized and the dreamer turns them into a successful vocation. 'Such a person is Winifred A. Sbick, who, In addition to doing extensive work in poster designing, is the head of the art department in one of the large department stores here. Mrs. Shlck, who. with her husband, Leonard B. Shick, originated “The Twigs,’’ a society composed of many prominent commercial artists and advertisers in the city, conducts what might ibe termed an ideal artist's studio. It j contains all the necessary elements of ! unfinished pieces of work strewn around j the room. It is embellished by dabs of paint at ail Inconsistent locations. Asa final touch it has a number of easy chairs and divans which give it the essential Bohemian air.
ORNAMENT TO STUDIO Indei and, Mrs. Shick is an ornament to the studio, lending a touch of atmosphere. She is a petite dark-eyed woman who insists upon discussing the merits of her friends instead of her own successes. She possesses a mas3 of short curly black hair and a piquant turned up nose which would make her an eligible subject for the posters she designs. “Yes, we have been very lucky with getting our work in, even during the war,” she said, displaying a number of books containing examples of her work. “Considering that we have only bad our studio for a year and a half we have done quite well.” The story of the “Shieks” as they sign themselves on their works is one of the small town artist Just out of college struggling along for success, the plunge against the advice of the sages in the town and the trlumplf of success. ‘‘We do well what we like to do best” is the motto by which Mrs. Shick says she and her husband work. “We stick to the kind of art that wo like to do because we know we can do it best. The word ’artist’ covers as many specialties ss does "doctor.* No one artist can cover the Held of art; neither do we try.’’ According to Mr. Shick’s own statement she likes to do “kids” best; kids doing something or doing nothing; any kids, any age, any way, anywhere, Just so its kids. ADVOCATE OF “SELLING” TROD HOT. ■Jdrs. Shick is an ardent advocate of “sening" your product. “There is no advertising illustration,” she declares, •‘no matter how beautiful it is, a success unless it assists the copy in selling the product it advertises. In a great many cases more time U spent in determi"ing the selling point In an Illustration than In actually producing the picture. Thorough analysis of the subject at hand mlust be given to make yourself a successful advertising artist.” Among her rules for making a successful poster she lays out a number of “dont's.” “More advertisements have been spoiled either because the artist tried to sell a whole series of posters all rolled into one, or because he was more of an artist than au advertiser.’’
