LIGHT IN COURT ACCOUNTED FOR Window Repair Work Permits Sun to Enter. The snn *hone in Judge Anderson's Federal Courtroom a few days for the first time in many months. Although the room is a place of great brilliance, both in lighting and the quality of the discourse from bench and bar, the light of the great out of doors seldom penetrates. The reason is the key to some interesting traditions. Heavy dark green velvet curtains completly cover both of the large stained glass windows. The windows form one of the moat beautiful features of the room, but only on rare occasions when workmen have to repair them are they opened or the curtains thrown back so they may be seen from the inside. It was this act that let the sunlight In the other day. The story of the darkened windows as related by Charles La Salle, bailiff of the court for more than nineteen years, is this: When the Federal building was completed in 1906 the acoustics in the courtroom were so poor that it was soon discovered court could not be held there. Judge Anderson fonna It almost impossible to make himself heard ten feet from the bench because of the numerous which crasaed about from the deep window recesses, the marble columns and the hard walls, ceil.ngs and floors. The judge served notice on the custodian that something had to be done. So the old experiment of stringing a gr'diron of fine wires from wall to wall near the ceiling was tried, which resulted in little improvement. The window curtains were hung and thick carpet placed upon the flocr. This helped and nothing further was done for three or four year*;. It was not until felt padding an Inch and one-half thick was placed in the pan els between the marble columns around the walls and in sections of the celling* that the remedy was found.
