CHARGES BOOZE GANG WITH CRIME Blackford County Official Believes Frazier Murdered. Special to The Times. HARTFORD CITY, Ind., Dec. 10.— That William Frazier, former tenant on the Merritt Chapman farm, east of the city, where the body of a man was found in the ruins of a dwelling which burned last Friday, was murdered by the members of a bootlegging gang, is the be- 1 lief of one Blackford County official who is taking an active part in the investigation. This officer, whose name is withheld, has returned from a trip to Greenville, Ohio; Muncie, Portland, Redkey, Ridgevllle and Dunkirk, where he investigated the affair. Acording to this officer he secured evi dence to show that members of the alleged gang, of which Frazier Is sllld to have been a member, feared he would be arrested on a charge of forgery and would tell of the gang's operations. Farmers in the vicinity of Frazier's former home report that on aev< ral occasions he made an effort to sell liquor \ to them. Frazier is said to have passed several forged checks at Muncie and thes police there were preparing to arrest him when the fire occurred and he disappeared. Mother Pleads for Freedom of Youth in Prison Peru Woman Wishes Boy Home to Aid in Filling Family Larder. “We'd like to have Omer home for Christmas. The little fellow don't real ize where he is. and It will be a pretty poor Christmas at our house without him.” This parting plea was made to the State Board of Pardons by Mrs. Clara Siegford of Peru, mother of Omer D. Siegford, 21, who Is confined In the Indiana Reformatory on a charge of stealing automobile tires from a box car. Siegford was a clerk for the Wabash Railroad at Peru. Mrs. Siegford, who made the trip to Indianapolis at a sacrifice of the money needed go beep the family larder stocked up, pleaded in a way in which only a mother can. for her boy’s freedom. She said her boy was not a erimtna' at heart, and that It was due to bad company and evil influences that led him to commit the crime. Mrs. Siegford to'd the board of pardons that she is working in a basket factory in Pern to beep the family in food. Her husband, who Is aged and an invalid, is cot able to work and she fold the board she wished her sou back to aid in keeping the family. Verner Davidson, a Pern taxi driver, who was implicated in the taeft for which Siegford is doing time. Is also asking n parole. Leroy Arnold, prosecutor of Miami County, In a letter to he board, asked the same consideration for Davidson, which the board might extend Siegford. Cop Takes Auto, but Fails to Get Thief Motor Policeman Wilson almost caught an automobile thief. He was on his way home when I,eon Moroney, 834 West Michigan street, stopped him and said a man had just stolen an automobile from in front of the English Hotel. The policeman got Into Moroney’s automobile and they pursued the thief, who turned west to Illinois street and thence north. When near Michigan and Illinois streets, the thief stepped the car. ran down an alley and escaped. The policeman took the stolen car back to the English Hotel. Riley Adams living at the hotel owned the automobile. Rushville Judge Is Seriously Injured Srecia! to The Times. RFSnVILLE, Ind.. Dec. 10—John P Stech, City Court Judge, is in a critical condition at his home here as the resnlt of injuries received Thursday when he was struck by an automobile driven by Edmund Gartln. Mr. Stech suffered a broken right arm and a broken right leg and was rendered nneonsdous. His injuries may prove fatal, It Is said. Stop Huns at U. S. Line LAREDO, Texas, Dec. 10—Six German men and one woman, all neat and with money, were caught here last night by immigration inspectors trying to enter the United States from Mexico illegally. Morgan, secretary of the board of public health, and certificates showing' the grades Issued, it was announced today. In conjunction with the grading system, which will necessarily Involve detailed reports on condition of silver, glassware, linen, storage rooms, serving and cooking facilities and the health condition of the help, Dr. Morgan announced a crusade will be made to clean up every place where food Is served or kept.
