PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION TO CLEAN ITS SLATE Chairman Tells of Effort to Dispose of Important Cases by End of Year. MANY APPEALS HEARD All important casts now pending before the public service commission of Indiana will be disposed of and a virtually clean calendar will face the commission Jan. 1, 1921. according to Ernest I. Lewis, chairman. The commission hopes to dispose of about forty cases by the end of the present year, Mr. Lewis said, leaving approximately 10m small cases, some of which have not been Hied long enough to be heard and new cases which may be tiled between now and the last of December. Some of these eases also may Include those on which rebearings must be held. Should only this amount of enses lie ieit befoie the commission the hopes of the chairman will have been fulfilled and it will be considered a clean slate. When the present commission, under the chairmanship of Mr. Lewis, assumed its duties May 1, 1917. &14 cases were awaiting action. On Jan. 1, 1918, this number had been reduced to 321 cases. Jan. cases per month, with 141 cases pending now, to be disposed of before Jan. 1, 1921. Decisions are still pending with the commission on several Important cases on which bearings have been held. Among t e arc ;he decision on the Indianapolis Street Railway Company's petition for u.uoritj to charge 2 cents for transfers, and for readjustment of rental rates paia by iuterurban companies using the city lines and terminal facilities; the petitions of the Indianapolis & Cincinnati Traction Company and the Terre Haute, Indianapolis & Eastern Traction Company and the Interstate Public Service Company; the first two for higher rates in the city of Indianapolis and the latter for increases in general rates. A petition is pendiug also before the commission, filed by the Union Traction Company of Indiana, asking for higher fares on the Broad Ripple line. Decisions, following hearings which have been held, are also to be handed down by the commission, on the petition of the Indianapolis Water Company, for an increase in rates; as well as similar petitions by the Richmond Gas Company, South Bend Electric Light and Power Company, Indiana Power Company of Vincennes, Terre Haute Gas Company, Terre Hauje Water Company and Terre Haute Electric Company. The present year has been an exceptionally strenuous one for the commission, according to Mr. Lewis. Due to the reconstruction period following the close of the war. and the accompanying readjustments, hundreds of petitions from utilities that wero trying to survive after-war conditions, have been received and es orts were made to dispose o them as qnioklv as possibly. Especially were hardships encountered by the smaller, and by many large utilities, due to the serious coal situation.
