SAYS OSTRACISM IS DIVORCE CLUB (Continued From I’age One.) •ake of the children than to strike her husband for a divorce. 'society and church OWE DUTY HERE. Both society and the churches owe a duty with respect to divorces. Social ostracism of the offending party is society’s most effective weapon: and disciplining by the church the church’s most effective weapon. The present divorce law Is sufficient. The fault lies in its administration. In those cases where there is no appearance by the defendant the prosecuting attorney is supposed to appear and present the State’s defense, which is in fact such defense as the defendant could bring forth. For such service that officer only receives f5, a totally inadequate compensation for fcuch service as be ought to render, and adequate service is not rendered by him. The State’s "Interest is neglected. Theoretically in all instances the delinquent defendant ought to be compelled to come into court and not only himself testify on his own behalf, but to produce witnesses who would give their version of his side of the controversy. But If that were done in this county in all instances our courts would do nothing else than try divorce cases. As It is, a very large percentage of their time Is in the hearing of domestic troubles. POSSIBLE SOLUTION IS SUGGESTED. Perhaps a court of domestic relations would help solve the divorce problem. The right of divorce in many instances should not be abolished but our Federal Constitution should be so amended that Cong Tess could adopt a divorce law and thus wipe out all State laws pertaining to dlToree. Only one law should be ap plicable to the subject of divorce and the State courts should be empowered to enforce the provisions of the Federal divorce statute. Restrictions on marriage hare been snggested; but that is not the solution: for if young people attached to each ether cannot get married because of the ban of the law they will go together and Illegitimate children are th* result. About 1557 the condition of the poor of Vienna was so great that thousands could not pay the marriage fees exacted by the government and officiating mar riage officers. That year there were 2.000 Illegitimate children horn In that city. Note—This is the concluding article of a series dealing with the chief causes of the divorce evil as seen by Judge W. W. Thornton of Superior Court, Room 1.) Put Lid on ‘Kick’ HOUSTON, Texas, Dec. 3.—Federal prohibition agents acting on information that grocers here planned to tilt the lid on Christmas and New Years, raided stores and confiscated 400 Jars sos brandied cherries and mincemeat. The fruit was said to contain more than one-half of 1 per cent alcohol.
