For nearly two centuries the people in the Western Hemisphere were under the Impression that the United States lacked beautiful scenery, and every year hundreds of persons toured Italy and Switzerland seeking the beauties of the scen•*y. Then came the period prior to the war when an effort was made to interest people in the scenic views of this continent, and "See America First” became the slogan of the railway companies. But It remained for the war to bring home to the people the real possibilities of this country for beauty, for It was not until then that they began to discover that all the grandeur of nature is not situated in the Old World. Asa logical sequence to this there came the education of the people of each State that It le not for them to Journey half way across the continent to Yellow Stone Park or to make a trip Into Canada. At the John Herron Art Institute an exhibition of forty-four oil paintings by T. C. Steele, known as the "Brown County Artist,” will open Sunday, and will continue through the entire month of December. During November a group of painttags by William Forsyth were on ex-

Befoung /arYour . \ears You were taught at school that your body undergoes a complete change of structure every seven years. This tearing down and building up process of body tissue continues without a moment’s pause throughout life. And when a man gets into a physical condition that the tissues keep breaking down and wasting away faster than Nature c*.n replace them, right then he begins to grow “old”. This doesn’t necessarily mean, however, that he has reached an advanced age. Thousands upon thousands of people begin to break down, them vital organs giving evidence of fast approaching decay, long before they reach middle age simply because they fail to give Nature, at the proper time, the needed help to rebuild. If you are beginning to show the slightest sign of a physical “let-down”—it you are losing your old time “pep” vim and vigor—if high tension energy and nervous strain are beginning to tell on you—it’s a sure sign that you are growing “old” '"too old for your years. You’ve reached that stage where your vital forces need rebuilding. Don’t make the serious mistake
hlbltlou. The majority of these depicted views in and around Irvington, and the Steele display which, with one exception, portrays scene* in Brown County, is a very logical successor with the objective of teaching the people to appreciate their own home State. A woman visiting the Forsyth exhibition remarked that she never knew that there were so many picturesque spots in Indianapolis. Then, she said, that after she went out to Irvington she saw numbers of pretty spots which she had never noticed there before. But regardless of the educational value the pictures which Mr. Steele has placed on exhibition are very attractive. Although they may observe the rules and regulations of art they are of such a nature that the person who lovea a thing for its beauty can appreciate them Properly speaking, they are divided into two large sections. One which occupies the east gallery deals with Brown County finery. Those which are in the adjoining alcove have subjects In still life. The entire collection has been placed in a standard, modest frame in order that the beauty of the painting Itself may not be detracted from. The scenery has also been divided Into separate groups. On the north wall of the gallery the spring works have been hung. On the south wall are those of summer and early autumn, and those depicting late autumn and winter are on the west wall. On the south wall is a Urge canvas*. “The Forest In Midsummer,” which Is one of the most pleasing scene* in the entire group. It lea study in greens and impresses the visitor with a spirit of happlneaa. Asa direct contrast to
