SAYS DIVORCE IS SEVERING OF LEGAL MARRIAGE (ConttroMl From Page One.) great laxity nnd a "rent failure of parents to prepare their children for marriage by not pointing out to them the perils of hasty marriages and not preparing their minds concerning the duties and obligations of married life. It Is my observation that the greatest cause for divorce is the failure of the husband to give sufficient support to his wife. Laziness on his part may he at the bottom of his failure, but not always by any means. A young man is earning enough to support himself and give him a little spending money, or to enable him each week to lay something aside. A young woman is doing the same thing, but seldom does she save, spending her money on dress. Her great resource of entertainment is work, the theater and the soda fountain are only Incidental entertainment for her. They marry, buy furniture for a room or two on the installment plan at a very exorbitant price: and then undertake to live on what he alone earns as well as pay out of his income the furniture bill, for she quits work. Life for her in their rooms is dull and soon becomes unattractive while he Is away. Soon her clothes are old and faded: no new ones are coming in, for the husband has no money with which to buy any. Even the food may be somewhat scanty. , Soon she contrasts her present condition and circumstances with those that snrrounded her when she lived at home and her parents furnished her bed and board; or even when she wholly supported herself alone. She begins to wonder why she got married, and she can see no better outlook for the future. SEES OTHERS DOING AS SHE USED TO DO. While he is away she seeks the society of other girls who may be under similar circumstances. She sees many of her girlhood companions still wearing good clothes and going to places of entertainment. The result is that often she becomes unhappy in her condition and discontented with her lot. Then it is that temper manifests Itself. They quarrel, hot words flow readily, opprobious epithets are applied by them to each other: she flees to her home and eventually resorts to the divorce courts. On the other hand, because of bis wife's nagging he may grow disgusted with her conduct; his love for her wanes or ceases to be; he leaves her society because she does not make home attractive for him. She prepares his meals very indifferent, often not at all. Ho finds companions—often women—more attractive, and eventually deserts her. She has made little or no effort to retain his love, and without love between them the home cannot be maintained. He so abandons her that she seeks the companionship of others, men not infrequently. In either case it is then that adultery Is frequently committed. Often the man Is to be blamed; often it Is the woman, and not infrequently 'both. ,

DRAMATISTS HAVE OPPORTUNITIES In the Movies, Says Famous Writer
“The movie field offers unlimited possibilities to dramatists.” That is the belief and suggestion of Henry Arthur Jones, noted English playwright and dramatist, who has just reached the United States. Jones is most interested at the moment in the forthcoming production here by the Famous PlayersLasky Corporation of a stage play and a photoplay which he brought with him, all typed out in hook form and, as ho says, "not needing a single crossing of a *t\” With seventy produced plays to his credit. Including among the more notable, “The Liars,” "The Silver King,” ‘‘The Hypocrites,” “Mrs. Dane's Defense” and “Cock o’ the Walk," Jones now ia turning his attention seriously for the moment—and for the moment only—to the cinema field. Ho brought the play, which first will be done for the stage and later for the screen, and will go into the studios nnd assist in the preliminary preparation for the work to be done upon it. He is confident the story will make its mark as a picture, saying only it "is somewhat spectacular, but filled with human interest." “The motion picture industry,” he says, “is only in Us babyhood. It has a most ductile and facile technique; a boundless comprehension of events; an almost diabolical power of suggestion and insinuation and an equally great power of vivid, startling contrast. It has an infinite variety of action and world-wide freedom of movement. In all these respects the film offers to dramatists lavish opportunities which are denied by the spoken stage. It also has a greater command and a truer presentation of landscape than the

stage, “with Its pert vulgarities and Its dictionary of slang.” “The film welcomes and Invites romance and Imagination," he said. “True, these two factors will be denied speech, but how rarely have they been allowed to make themselves heard on the regular stage.” He does not believe, however, that the film play ever will supersede the spoken drama. -I- -I- -INOW ON VIEW. “His Honor, Abe Potash," at the Murat; "It’s Up to You," at English’s; big time vaudeville at Keith’s; “The Lid Lifters,” at the Park; popular vaudeville at the Lyric and the Broadway, musical comedy at the Rialto; "Just Pals,” at the Regent; “Sins of Rosanne,” at the Isis; “One Hour Before Dawn,” at Mister Smith’s; "Something to Think About,” at the Ohio; “The Scoffer,” at the Circle; “An Old-Fashioned Boy,” at the Alhambra, and “The Daughter Pays,” at the Colonial, are the attractions on view today. -I- -I- -IDUK THURSDAY. “The Girl in the Spotlight," anew musical comedy, will open its engagement at English's Thursday night. HOROSCOPE "The stars incline, but do not compel." THURSDAY. DEC. . Astrologers read this as rather a menacing day. While Jupiter is in beuefic aspect, Uranus, Saturn and the Sun aro all adverse. It Is a sinister rule for all who seek to present any claims for services rendered or favors bestowed. While this rule prevails they who seek political preferment will not be lucky. Jupiter gives promise to merchants and manufacturers. There will be much buying, despite all prophesies to the contrary. Persons whose birthdnte it is should safeguard themselves against loss. Travel and change will not be lucky. Those who are employed should be careful. Children born on this day may have many vicissitudes in life, but they have power to overcome all difficulties.
