MELODRAMATIC THRILLS ABOUND IN FOX MOVIE A Real Movie at Colonial—MacDonald Is Well Cast —Love an the Farm

HICBMAS. The movie, "While New Yurk Sleeps," might r.s well h*tl lieen nmed “What Happens In Xew York Between Midnight end the Time the Milkman Comes Around" or “Easy Mouej and Quick Death ip the Big City.” It is impossible to take “While New York Sleeps" seriously, as hundreds of melodramatic tricks are used in rapid succession to shock those witnessing the picture. Those who love 10, 20 gnd 30-eent melodrama on the stage will find all the Drills of that stage transferred to the screen In this Fox movie. • The movie is divided into three stories —the first concerns the wife of a wealthy man who fells to tell her husband that she has beep married before and that her husband is still living although she thought him dead and no divorce had been obtained; there is a shooting and husband No. 1 is dead. The secern} story deals with a gay peacock who lures men to her apartments and there she stages a fake suicide; her supposedly lovable husband arrives on the scene as the man in the case Is faced with the murder; the man hands over $2,0U0 in cold cash; the supposedly dead vampire comes to life after the male victim departs; the woman and her confederate plan to trim some other rich “simps” in Brooklyn as the detectives arrive and It’s all over for the vamp and her confederate. The third story concerns Nina, her husband, who is a night watchman, a leader of a gang and the father of the Bight watchman. The father ts a paralytic who cannot apeak except with his eyes, and In this method he tips the detectives off to the real murderers of her son. This episode Is so realistic that it is grewsome and the acting of Estelle Taylor, Earl Metcalf and Harry Soifiern certainly has a terrific punch. Opinion: If you want to be shocked with nnderworld life, gun play, mystery and melodramatic .realism, then you are safe, but if you are a quiet sort of a person and have nerves—well, “While New York Sleeps” is no place for you. At the Murat pll week. *1- -I- -i-' ZSNA AND TEA RLE APPEAR IN MODERN ROBINSON CRUSOE. One shipwreck generally affords a bunch of adventure, but -when there are two such wrecks In a single moTie, in an effort to get the hero and a beautiful girl together on a deserted South Sea island —well one can expect anything to happen. There is a lot of delicious adventure In “Marooned Hearts," In which Conway Tearla and Zena Keefe are cast upou the same deserted island in the South Seas after two ships are wrecked. It all comes about when Marlon Ainsworth, played by Miss Keefe, falls to deliver a message to Dr. Paul Carrington (Tearle), calling him to "a hospital, and instead she pilots him off ljj a motor boat to a picnic. The patient at the hospital dies and When Dr. Carrington realizes the “yellow ’ in his intended wife, he picks up his laboratory instruments and starts to S South Sea island. When his boat is destroyed, Carrington is cut off from the world, while he experiments, and after a year's time Marion starts out in a yacht in search Os the elector, but the boat is wrecked, or to be more accurate it burns up, and Sb is cast on the shores of the island where the doetor lives. Os eourse, one eould not expect the lady ip question to carry a suitcase, %nd *o the poor dear had to make a dress out tffegrass, a sort of a shredded wheat W The doetor for a while refuses to even re-ink arthe fair Marion, but in the end 'he forgets the past and the two are able to leave the Island for civilisation. Opiniop—“Marooned Hearts” is a welcomed relief from the regular yun of pictures, well acted when there Is any real work called for; beautifully mounted and splendidly photographed. At the Colonial all week.

A LAVISH PRODUCTION, HU* A MIGHTY WEAK STORY. Ju*t why a movie producer should spend* bo much money on such a weak ■topy as “Tile Nestles* Sex” is more than I can see. A fortune has beep spent in lavish settings, lip coloring for the actor* a* well as the female members of the east —the faces of the players are so white and expressionless and the life so red. “The Restless Sex’* concerns a girl who loves one man and marries another; awful unhappiness results; husband Is compelled to kill himself under a train before the wife is free to marry the man of her ehoice. Silly *tuff, that—and It is given a setting as lavish as Ziegfeld Follies, really a thing of beauty, but to no purpose. The work of Marlon Davies us the discontented woman in search of pleasure is just fair, nothing startling Is her work, and Carlyle Balckwell does as well as he can with bis role of the husband. At the Ohio all week. SHE THOUGHT SHE FOUND HAPPINESS DOWN ON THE FARM. A little cabaret actress, who l* known at the City Sparrow, thought she had found happiness down on the farm with a real son of the sod. While one of the centers of Interest of the gay city life, as pictured on the movie screen, but entirely different in peal life, the little city-bred sparrow Buffers physical injuries In an accident which causes her to fill iu love with David Muir, the country-bred person. Wedding bells are about ring out when the past walks into her little paradise and the little sparrow floats away front her huaband. Os course her husband Is made to understand and She returns to the farm and the arms of her farmer lover. That is the atory of ‘The City Spar, row." Ethel Clayton is the '‘Sparrow," and she has a chance to show that she can act and be beautiful at the nme time. AMUSIMRNTB.
