Work Certificates in Schools Increase More work certificates were given to children of school age during the last school year than during the previous year, the annual report of William A. Hacker, director of school attendance, shows. In the school gear of 1919-20 a total of 6.805 certificates were issued as against 5,510 In the preceding year. r Only forty-one prosecutions under the compulsory attendance law as compared to 141 the previous year. Investigation was' made in 23,255 cases of which 679 were In parochial schools. Aid was given to 639 children, 141 heads of families receiving insufficient Income to send their children- to school, fifteen unemployed persons, 112 sick persons and elghty-slx widows. PREPARING FOR COX RALLY HERE Committees Named to Arrange Details of Meeting. The following committee chairmen for the Cox meeting, Oct. 28, have been announced by Fred Hoke, chairman of the committee on general arrangements: Reception, Aqullla Q. Jones; music and decorations, John B. Shea; automobiles, Bowman Elder; publicity, Stanley Garrison. An address Is to be made prior to tbe arrival of Governor Cox by Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch, Democratic candidate for Governor. > This will be the only speech, In addition to that delivered by Governor Cox. If the weather Is suitable the meeting will be held at the southwest segment of Monument Circle, but If the weather Is unsuitable the meeting will be held in Tomlinson Hall. *■ A number of bands have been engaged for the occasion. , The Taggart-for-Senator Club will meet at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Indiana Democratic Club. The club will discuss plans for the parade to precede the Cox meeting. A smoker and social session will follow the business meeting. • x Judge Landis Pays No Heed to Threat Note Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis of Chicago, who was In Indianapolis y#sterday to speak before the Indiana State Teachers' Association, received a threatening note about an hour before he spoke. The note, addressed to the judge at the Claypool Hotel, said: “For the last time you are warned to keep your and mouth shut concerning charges that you have made against •radical movements' in speeches at Chicago and other! towns in which yau have spoken.” The letter was postmarked Indianapolis. Judge Landis paid no attention to the note. Neither the police nor Federal authorities were notified of the incident. First Aid Service May Save Man’s Life William H. Scooler, 20, of 840 North Eastern avenue, is in a serious condition at the City Hospital as a result of drinking carbolic acid. Scooler told the police he was despondent over financial troubles. He drank the acid on an interurban car and then went home. Prompt action by a physician, who gave first aid, will probably save his life. QUESTION WANDERER’S SANITY. CHICAGO, Oct. 23.—Alienists were in the midst of a battle today over the sanity of Carl Wanderer, charged with murder of his wife and a “ragged stranger.”
