LEGION HEAD SOLDIER-SAILOR Galbraith Man Honors as Colonel of 147th Infantry. CINCINNATI, Ohio. Oct. 23.-Not many men In the American Legion can boast of having been both a soldier and a sailor, but both of these careers, professions, occupations or what you will, are written in the record of F. W. Galbraith Jr., of this city, now national commander of the American Legion. It was not. however, as a gob that Mr. Galbraith adventured on the deep, but as an apprentice coxswain, third mate and finally second mate aboard American sailing ships after his graduation from the Nautical Training School, Boston, Mass., In the class of 1895. More than a score of years later when tba world war came Mr. Galbraith went into it from the land angle and as colonel of the 147th Infantry won the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre and the Croix de Guerre with palm for heroism In the Meuse-Argonne offensive in which he was wounded. He took part also in the St. Mihlel drive and •erred In the Baccarat and Ypres-Lys sectors. He w-sg commissioned major in the Ist Infantry, Ohio National Guard, in 1916, and the same year was promoted to colonel. In January, 1917, he was assigned to command the 147th Infantry at Camp Sheridan, Ala., and remained in command throughout the war. At the first State convention of the American Legion, held in Ohio, Mr.,Galbraith was unanimously elected department commander.
