SHORTRIDGE HIGH USED AS CACHE BY BOOTLEGGER (Continued From rage One.) touched liquor, not even to transfer it from one man to another. Both the customer and the bootlegger looked at the driver In surpriae. Wilson said: “Well, 1 guess I will have to do business with you. Come on and we will get the stuff.” He led the way to the courtyard between the old new buildings of Shortrldge High School and remarked: “You aee, a fellow must be careful. “I am not afraid of the police, but you can never tell when a Federal man Is around. The other night a Federal man tried to uri-est a man with some whisky ln an automobHe and the Federal man got all cut up. You wait here.” GETS I!OOZE JUST AROUND CORNER. The customer halted ln the darkness at the northeast corner of the old Bhortrldgo building and Wilson walked around the corner. He could not have gone more than ten feet, for he was back almost Instantly, bringing with him a bottle of whisky. This liquor was bottled ln bond and was "Woodland Straight Kentucky whisky, put, up by Crigler & Crlgler, Covington, Ky.,” made ln th* spring of 1914 and bottled ln the fall of 1920.” The price charged by Wilson was S4.CO, which was CO cents cheaper than the bootlegger in front of the Stegemeler case charged for the same brand the night before. A caution label on the bottle said! “The Crlgler A Crigler Company, lne., permit No. (Ky, B) 142, whisky; half pint | 100 proof. Manufactured spring, 1914 j for medlolnal purposes only. Sale or use for other purposes will cause heavy penalties to be inflicted.” “Blip that into your pocket, prefeasor,* said Mr. Wilson. “It sure la good stuff." “Where do you get that professor stuff?” asked the visitor. “Why anybody who would *ee you walk out from Shortrldge high School would think you were a professor,” explained the bootlegger. “Professor of what, booxeology ?" asked the visitor, "Tea, thatrs It," and Wilson laughed aa he hurried across the street as th*
HIRAM JOHNSON CALLS WATSON ARCH BETRAYER . (Continued From Page One.) son for the people should be made plain, so that If the people desire, they may express a contempt themselves for the men who cynically betray them. Would you do me the kindness on receipt of this note to write me at 857 Green street, San Franciso, whether or not you think I can get over any publicity in your State on a letter concerning delegates who, presumably representing the people, betray them? SECOND LETTER WRITTEN JULY . Following that letter Senator Johnson again sent one to Mr. Mote July 9. It was written on the stationery of the United States Senate committee on Cuban relations, and is as follows: My Dear Carl: Day before yesterday. Just after the conclusion of the Deeocratlc convention, I issued a statement construing the two platforms and upon the great principle involved stated my position. I enclose herewith copy. For eighteen months I devoted all of my energy and vitality to what I deem to be the paramount Issue In this campaign. In some small measure I have contributed to the result in the Senate and to the present condition of the sentiment of the country. We have, for the moment, averted what we thought was a real peril. I was quite in earnest when, during the campaign, I said relieatedly that I would make almost any sacrifice to prevent the Wilson Leogue of Nations from being foisted upon the Republic. I feel that the last great battle on the subject is before us, and that the contest finally comes to the people themselves. In the statement, which I enclose, I j have endeavored very briefly to show that the Republican platform takes Its stand against the league, even with reservations, and the Democratic party frankly is for it. The situation thus pre sented leaves, to one like myaeif, who has lived with the same issue and made It a part of himself, but one course to pursue, and that Is, of course, to pinbrace the Republican platform. Upon the twenty-second Mr. Harding makes his speech of acceptance. If thejx, like an honest man, he frankly and courageously takes his position. Americans who feel like I do can enthusiastically support him. Ls, however, on the twentysecond, he straddles, evades or is guilty of duplicity—well, that is smother story, as Mr. Kipling says. I do not intend, by any means, because of the great over-shadowing issne to overlook the system which prevailed at Chicago, or to forget the men responsible for that system, or those other contemptible creatures who betrayed their .people. While in striving for the big thing I must put aside for the moment the lesser, and while I may declare a truce for a few short weeks, I Intend to devote myself to smashing this system, to exposing the Individuals responsible for It and to holding up to public scorn and obloquy the men who betrayed the rauk and file of the party who had expressed their will at a direct primary. s' REALIZES TASK IS DIFFICULT ONE. I understand the Job I have undertaken, I realise how little possibility there will be of success, particularly if our ticket is elected. Nevertheless, we can only go on striving for what we think is right end in the remaining brief period that I am in political life. I shall do this. I know no better place to commence than In your State. 1 would like to make plain, aa you did in your communlca-' tion to the “Star,'' how the individual who represented the Republican party at Chicago contemptuously said, “The people of Indiana be damned,” and deliberately and designedly violated every tenet of good faith and trusteeship. It does not make any difference how Jim Watson may have voted at Chicago, lie went there pledged by your State convention and your people to General Wood. From the Instint he arrived he was endeavoring to destroy Wood, and. of course, myself. He was In the cabal that finally nominated Harding. Indeed, he was the willing supereerviceable tool for the more cunning rneu who have ever pulled the strings for him to dance In hie little political life. What a travesty it la upon Democracy! What an outrage upon human rule, that Watson should spend his time aa au accredited representative from Indiana trying to put over at Chicago the man who received but one rote In ten in yonr State, and by every Ingenious, underhanded means seeking to destroy the two men who received the Indorsement of your people. How can I get a communication simply by reciting the facts, writen in ju- j dlclal fashion, before yonr people? I do not want to assail Watson, and it Is not for myself I wish this. It is abso- j lutely essential, ls our Republican form of government Is to continue, if we are to photect our people at aU. and register their will when expressed, that they should know the facts and know the facts in such mauner that thev can guard against a repetition of the wrong. Unfortunately, I have lost the address of Mr. Johnson. I want you to send it to me so that I can write him my manv thanks for all bt kindness to me. In the interim, until I have that opportunity, please tell him that the reason he hae not heard from me is that between Washington and Ban Francisco I have lost my list of addresses. STILL AGAINST
! REACTION ARYISM i In hi* opening address Mr. Hedrick explained that he still stood against reactlonarylsm. “I stand today as I stood !n 1912 and 1914,” he aald, “against ths reactionary - Ism o t the Republican party in Indiana, In the nation and especially that of my eloquent, bale and well-met friend, James Ell Watson. “Mr. Watson filled a place In the House of Rep resents tires and whatever prestige was his he received from the people. After he was defeated for Governor in 1908 he became an employe, or legal representative, of the National Manufactuers’r Association as a lobbyist in the flnlted States CVmgress. “There is one sure thing: The leopard cannot change hie apota and I fear It la hard for Mr. Wataon to be removed, except ,by the vote of the people, from the sound of his Master’s Voice. “The Republican party In the nation Is In a peculiar dilemma, trying to do the impossible thing. For It Is true that a fountain cannot send forth both aweet and bitter water at the same time. “The party has Its Watsons and Its Hardings, its Johnsons and Boraha. The Watsons and Hardings in localities are for the League of Nations and In others they turn their backs on it. Johnson and Borah are forever against It. "With the exception of the League of Nations, however, I feel that my good friends Johnson and I are not very far apart now. We fought together In 1912 and also In 1914. We both left the Republican party because of Watson, Penrose, Smoot, Brandegee and Gallagher. FEELS THET ARE ONE ONE GREAT ISSUES. "Notwithstanding the fact that Johnson is now fighting the Democratlo ticket and the League of Nations, yet at heart I feel that on great Issues, such as reactionary Ism and James E. Watson, we still stand together and I feel sure If Johnson had a vote In the State of Indiana, as I have, that we would still be Joining hands together In endeavoring to swat such reactlonarylsm as that of Mr. Watson's. “If you desire the proof as to why I make this statement I will submit It to you." Then Mr. Hedrick produced the letters. Mr. Hedrick called attention to the ftict that Senator Johnson had referred in the last letter that If Harding straddled on ths league Issue It would be "another story." “That was ss plain a warning as -{he one he uttered at Chicago Saturday night,” said the speaker. “When Mr. Johnson said that the Republicans are on one side and the Democrats on the ether side of the league question, he meant every word of it. “It was a solemn warning to Mr. Harding to cease wlhbllng and wobbling or else Senator Johnson will withdraw his support.” Mr. Hedrick closed his address with a plea for all former Progressives to Support the Democlo ticket this year, dedarlng that It j&red the only, gamuts*
