In stating her reasons for being a £ .“Progressive Democrat," Mrs. Funk said that the Republican party was defeated ta 1912. not by the Democrats, bat by the Republicans who sat in judgment on their own party which had fallen in evil ways because of poor Judgment. “The Republican party had ceased to be the party of Lincoln, and had become the party of Penrose and his coterie who had taken it away from the people and haS it functioning for a little class," she •aid. Mrs. Funk, In discuselng the history of ths Republican V&rt.v, said that although every Republican platform had promised financial reforms the party had never given the country one. The speaker said those who had left the Republican party bad hoped the real party would return but it had not since Lodge, Penrose and Borah were still at the front She pointed out that since 1912 all the constructive legislation has been passed by the Democrats, citing the Federal Reserve Act and the Child Labor Act as examples. "When I heard Hughes, the RepubDean candidate for prealdent in 1916. say that all the Democratc work should be Wiped out, I knew that 1 would support Woodrow Wilson, the Democratic candidate, and 1 have never re arretted it,” she said. In treeing Senator Harding’s record in the Senate Mre> Funk pointed out that he was at the foot of the list of senators as a useful member of the body and as a Senator of initiative. ‘‘With the exception of twice in his five years in the Senate he has voted with the reactionary element of hit party," she mid, citing the Congressional Records as authority. Mrs. Funk pointed out that Senator Harding has taken a different stand on the League of Nations every time he made a speech regarding it. “The Republicans have stated that the League of Nations is the paramount issue of the campaign and yet they have not published it,” she said. Mr*. Funk devoted considerable time to interpreting the clauees of the league, Stressing the fact that the league cannot declare war. the power being vested in the council which must have the unanimous vote of its nine members. Miss Eleanor Barker, who was scheduled to give the Republican side of what was to be a debate was unable to speak because of an out-of-town engagement which compelled her to leave at the conclusion of Mrs. Funk’B address.

IB.—Death only can or will prore deflnitsly whether Terence MacSwiney is fasting his life away or whether he is taking nourishment in the hope that some turn of fate will release him from prison without making him a laughing stock. A physician at Drixton prison where the lord mayor of Cork today began his sixty-fourth day of fasting yielded thia Information: • Friends and relatives vehemently declared that the only sustenance given MacSwiney has been a thin cracker each morning In communion. Prison officials and attaches of the home office refused to talk, declaring H Is the policy of the government to main, tain silence. Irish office officials admitted, however, that if the government were able to obtain evidence of feeding they doubtless would be glad to announce it to the world in the hope of belittling the mayor. A heavy police guard halts newspapermen at the gate of Brixton prison. Muriel MacSwiney, the lady mayoress, talked with me on behalf of the relatives. She talked Impersonally of her husband's death aa a thing assured. There was no sign of worry or grief only indignation that there should be doubt of her husband's courage In carrying out his death strike. Prison physicians are doing everything to keep MacSwiney alive, his wife said. His room Is kept at high temperature, hot wa f er bottles are packed about hla emacla. and body and be is bathed three times dally, while careful examinations are made and report* on his condition filed with the home office.
