WATSON KICKS’ TO G.O.P. HEADS OVER ‘SPLIT-UP’ ■ ■ . . . i Desperate Over Opposition in Own Ranks, He Appeals to Washington. DEMANDS NATIONAL AID WASHINGTON, Oct. 7. Seemingly made desperate by the reported opposition from Republican ranks. Senator James E. Watson of Indiana has called on Republican leaders of Washington to prevent any further obstacles being put In his path. The Senator’s latest complaint and demand, It Is known, was directed to one of the leading Republican Senators, who might also be classed as a “progressive.’’ Senator Watson, It was said, had been angered because of opposition to his elec-, tion arising in Indiana and growing out of friendships which the “progressive Republican Senator’’ had made in the State. WILL CONFINE SPEECH TO HARDING’S CANDIDACY. - Tlie net result of the complaint Is probably that the progressive Senator will make no speeches in Indiana. If he goes Into the state, he may advocate the election of Senator Warren G. Harding, but It is assured now that he Will not discuss Watson’s candidacy In a manner to gain any votes for him. The story, which has gone the rounds f Washington recently and which It is understood can be supported by letters, Is that the senatorial committee, which Is endeavoring to elect Republican candidates for the Senate, one day addressed a letter to a progressive Republican Senator. The letter stated thar Watson was hava bad time in Indiana, that It seemed ha would be defeated and that if the tide against him within the Republican party eould not be stopped, the beating would he in the nature of a landslide. The letter then went on, it Is stated, to point out that Watson had told of objections to his candidacy arising in a Certain element of the Republican party In the State. In this element, it was said, there were many friends of the progressive Republican Senator. It was added that Watson was complaining about “something” the progressive Republican had said about him. Insofar as is known now, no answer

ever went back from the progressiva Republican Senator to the senatorial committee. The request, indirectly for Watson support, fell on deaf ears. The progressive republican Senator took the view that the success of ar.y one Individual within the party was not paramount; ibßt rather the entire party should be considered and he could ant make any effort to assist Watson In his effort to return to the Senate. THE REPUBLICAN SENATOR IS WOKKIUED—NOT MUCH. To tie more definite, the Senator laughingly added to one of his friends that “he would he greatly concerned If i Watson were t'ereated.” j The manner In which he said 4t Indicated that he was not losing any sleep ! over Wntson’s difficulties and that he would not trrrn a hand to assist the Indiana Senator. Cries for assistance for Watson have

been coming to Washington constantly. It Is understood It was the cry tor assistance, made directly to Senator Harding, that caused the Senator to agree to go to Indianapolis for one campaign speech. But with Harding now being pressed from all sides to make a definite statement as to his attitude and intentions with reference to the League of Nations, the question has arisen as to whethor his appearance in Indiana will give Watson any support. Other assistance in one fornr or another may be expected to go to Watson from Senator Penr- se of Pennsylvania. Penrose, Just arisen from his sick bed. Is known to be chagrined over the possibility of Watsons' deTent and to bo determined that the defeat shall not result If he can prevent It. Penrose looks upon Watson as his special aid nhd all his plans demand that Watson be returned to the Senate.
