association composed of art loving persons in all parts of the United States, whose contributions make it possible for exhibitions to be circulated throughout the country. These displays Include oil, water color and pastel paintings, pottery, photographs and other types of art work, some of which are very valuable. Small towns which possess no art gallery may through members of the association arrange to secure one of the exhibitions. The collection of South Sea Islands paintings by Stephen Hnweis, which Is on exhibition in the east gallery of the Institute, will continue to be 9n display for the next two weeks, when it will be replaced by a collection of photographs of Greece. PHOTOGRAPHS OF GREECE. These photographs have been sent out by the Greek government, accompanied by a guide who will give lectures upon them, for the purpose of acquainting the public with the beauties of modern Greece In comparison with the Greece of the past. A number of paintings of Hawels deal with a modern movement to Interpret movement on the canvass, and deserve considerable credit. A group of studies of the natives affords an excellent opportunity to the student to get acquainted with the habits and customs of the Islanders. In several studies of natives Haweis uses his scheme of breaking up the background, which does not detract from the central figure. The undersea pictures of fish life are another interesting phase in his work. Here fish of glaring colors are surrounded by other equally blazing and apparently inharmonious colors, which are evolved into other forms of sea life when studied carefully. Imagination is perhaps the greatest factor In understanding Hawels' work, for It refuses to be classified under any set.of rules of the real and exact. Nor do any two persons interpret a picture to mean exactly the same thing. But they are all worth studying, siiu-e thev are in themselves very beautiful and mark an epoch of Introducing something.

APPEAL ISSUED FOR FLAG DISPLAY National Emblem to Be Chief G. A. R. Decoration. An appeal to the managers and tenants of office buildings of Indianapolis to display American flags profusely during the week of the G. A. R. national encampment, Sept. 19 to 23, was issued today by Herman P. Lteuer. chairman of the decorations committee. Mr. Lieber pointed out tnat an opportunity for Indianapolis to show her tribute to the civil war veterans may never come again. In his letter to the managers and tenants of ouice buildings he said in part: “Let an effort be made by a!l in pasitlon to do so, for h generous and creditable decoration for this great occasion. “The G. A. R. officials have expressed a wish that the decorations be restricted practically to the flag itself, the flag certainly to be the keynote of the scheme which consequently will be quite simple." AIRPLANES TO MANEUVER. J. 1. Holcomb, chairman of the entertainment committee, today announced that a squadron of airplanea will maneuver over the city during the encampment. demonstrating part of the modern art of warfare to the veterans who fought in the battles of the civil war. Most of the planes will come from the speedway station. It was largely through the efforts of Maj. W. F. Harrell, in charge of the local army recruiting station, that the air division of the war department sanctioned the request for sending the planes here for the encampment week. Further plans for obtaining rooms in private homes for the thousands of visitors expected here for the encampment were taken up at a meeting at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the First Baptist church. A large number of women wiio will make a bouse-to-honse convass next Mon-
