Groesbeck, present attorney general, has won the republican nomination for governor of Michigan, it became certain today. Returns from 2,056 precincts out of 2,453, show that Groesbeck received 56.€BB votes in Tuesday’s primary. Milo D. Campbell, his nearest competitor, received 62,037 votes. Representatives Currie and P. H. Kelly, well known Michigan congressmen, failed In their bid for renomlnation. Miss Edith Dunk and Mrs. Helen C. Statler, who sought nominations for congress, also were defeated. Mrs. Eva M. Hamilton of Grand Rapids won a nomination for the state senate. SHORT RIDGE GETS CALIF. NOMINATION SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 2.—Complete returns today are expected to show a plurality for Samuel M. Shortridge of close to 35,000 as the republican nominee for the United States senate over William Kent, who was second in the race. Kent headquarters today conceded Shortridge a lead of about 18.000. A telegram was received today by Attorney Shortridge from S. A. J. Wallace, the third candidate for the nomination, conveying his congratulations. “In the nomination of Samuel M. Shortridge for senator this state has indorsed Senator Harding and his policies in no uncertain fashion,” said a statement issued from western headquarters of the national committee today. Shortridge will oppose Senator James D. Pheland, democrat, at the polls in November. Pheland was unopposed within his party. Labor Day Parade to Start at 9 Monday The Labor day parade next Monday will be formed in seven divisions and will start promptly at 9 o’clock from Meridian and St. Clair streets, according to plans formulated by the Labor day committee, of which O. G. Smock i chairman. The parade will be led by William Holmes, grand marshal, who will be followed by officials of the Central Labor Union. The main address will be made by Charles Fox, president o/ the State Federation of Labor, at a mass meeting in Tomlinson hall at 2 o’clock.
Ft. Harrison Y. M. C. A. Building Destroyed The Y. M. C. A. building at Ft. Beniamin Harrison was destroyed by fire last night. The building, which was one and onehalf stories in height, was constructed at the opening of the war. All of the equipment, including a motion picture machine, was destroyed. Y. M. C. A. officials were unable to estimate the loss. The origin of the fire is unknown. Cockle Burr Says No Danger From Frosts Special to The Times. SEYMOCR. Ind.. Sept. 2. —Farmers in •Taekson county say there will be no early frosts this fall, basing their prediction on the condition of the cockle burr. Their theory is that, if the burr matures early, there is a strong likelihood of aft early frost, bnt this year the burr is developing slowly and an early .frost would nip it. This is something that has never happened, farmers say. There is considerable early corn In •Taekson county and many farmers have feared it would be ruined by early cold snaps. TEACHERS’ CASE BEFORE HARDING Representatives of 700,000 at ‘Front Porch’. MARION. 0., Sept. 2.—The need of the nation's public school teachers for better conditions and compensation was laid before Senator Warren G. Harding today by a committee representing over 700,000 school teachers. Organizations represented in the committee which called at the Harding home were the National Educational association, the American Federation of Teachers and the Illinois State Teachers’ association. \ Members of the committee culled the candidate's attention to the serious light in which the teaching profession finds itself, and urged upon him the consideration of remedial measures. Today was a big day in Marion. The Chicago Cubs came here to play an exhibition game for Senator Harding. Members of the club called upon the republican candidate during the forenoon. The owners of the club, William Wrigley and A. D. Lasker, are identified with the Harding campaign. South Bend Man Is Masons’ Secretary William H. Swintz of South Bend, has been appointed grand secretary of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in Indiana, to succeed the late Calvin W. Prather. The appointment, which was made by Richard Schwietzer of Knlghtstown, grand master, will become effective Immediately. Brown Farmers to Be Unit of Federation The farmers of Brown county are to be organized as a unit of the Indiana Federation of Farmers’ Associations. A meeting will be held at Nashville tomorrow for the purpose of completing the organization and making arrangements for representation in the stat? convention of farmers to be held in Indianapolis In November. Farmers Won’t Form Gigantic Wheat Pool COLUMBUS, 0., Sept. 2.—The national board of farm organizations here today voted disapproval of a resolution designed to have farmers take over 2,500 co-operative elevators throughout the country and form a gigantic wheat pool. A committee from the board today will see Gov. Cox to ascertain his views on agricultural problems and will see Senator Harding at Marlon Friday.
