Sculptor Makes Gift to Town of His Youtli Special to The Times. MADISON, Ind., Sept. I.—Madison has received from the studio of George Grey Barnard of New York as a gift from the sculptor, plaster cast replicas of eighteen of his mos.t notable works. Barnard lived here with his parents when a young man before going to Paris to study. His father. Dr. J. H. Barnard, a retired Presbyterian minister, is still a resident of this city. His mother's death occurred here a few months ago and the sculptor will erect a memorial of his own making at her grave. The models presented to Madison are on exhibit at the Lanier Memorial museum where they will remain permanently. They include replicas of the famous' “Two Natures’’ group, the “Hewer,” two colossal figures from the Pennsylvania state capitol group and a number of smaller figures and bas-relief designs. I.—Earl Orr of Tipton, conductor on the Indlan-apolls-Logansport division of the T.'nlon Traction Company, may lose his right hand as the result of an attempt to talk to the dispatcher at Tipton over the telephone. A fuse burned out and the electric current shot through his right hand, burning several of his fingers so badly that amputation was necessary.

Murat Temple Man Dies at Bedford Mill Special to The Times. BEDFORD, Ind., Sept. I.—John R. Hughes, one of the most prominent pioneers in the oolitic limestone district, died at his mill here Tuesday afternoon of asthma and gastritis. He was a member of Apollo lodge, Masonic order, of Chicago, and the Murat temple, Shriners, of Indianapolis. Mr. Hughes was a native of Wale*, coming to this country when a lad of 18. A widow and four children survive.

EACH CHURCH TO GET 100 ROOMS Women’s Committees to Make Active Canvass. Every church in Indianapolis has been assigned a quota of at least 100 rooms la private homes to obtain within the next ten days for the G. A. R. national encampment, here Sept. 19-25. Every church is represented in the campaign by a committee of from three to five women who will make an active canvass to obtuin rooms. All committee members who did not attend the general meeting Monday ut the First Baptist church are urged to communicate with the headquarters of the housing committee, 701 Chamber of Commerce building, A general meeting of the committees will be held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Baptist chutvh. It Is hoped that some of the committee# will have obtained their quotas by that. time. Indianapolis Boy Scouts today started a house-to-house canvass and it is hoped that several thousand rooms will he obtained in this way. Meredith Nicholson, the author, today offered the use of two rooms In his home, 1500 North Delaware street, for the use of visitors to the encampment without charge. Many other persons also have offered rooms free of charge, Richmond Will Have Very Heavy Tax Rate Special to The Times. RICHMOND, Ind., Sept. I.—One of the heaviest tax rates in the history of Richmond is Imminent as a result of an Increase In the city school tax rate from 70 cents t 0 $1.25, as announced Tuesday by the city school board. The council increased the municipal rate to 90 cents and the county rate has been fixed at 30 cents, making a total of $2.45, exclusive of the state rate, which has not been announced. The school board states that SIIB,OOO additional will be required this year to pay for the Increases In the pay of teachers, Increased lost of coni and labor.
