SLACKER LIST TO BE PUBLISHED War Department Has 173,91'L 1 Names on Roll.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 9—The roll ot draft deserters, who. failed to respond to the draft call in the United States during the war, is to be posted soon by the war department. It will contain the names of every American eligible under the draft who evaded the call. > There are 173,911 names now on the list. The department is taking pains to avoid having the name of any man listed on the deserters' roll who does not deserve to have it there. An appeal was issued today to all those who served honorably and who are In doubt as to their status to communicate at once with the department In’ order that no injustice be done. The announcement said; “The war department is most anxioua not to place upon any man who served his country honorably the humiliation of having his name appear as a slacker, and for that reason is seeking the widest publicity of the fact that a list of deserters will be published, and that the men whose names appear on that list will be arrested and brought to trial before a military court. “Any man, therefore, who is not positive that his record with his local board was complete in every detail should avail himself at once of this opportunity to clear his record and avoid the probable publication of his name as a deserter. “Once the list of deserters is posted, every means at the disposal of the army will be brought into play to bring about the arrest and trial of the guilty. “The tremendous public sentiment against slackers will cause the whereabouts of most of them to be revealed and it is hot expected that any guilty man will escape.”
OFFICIAL CALLS MADE FOR ROOMS Governor and Maj'or Issue Proclamations for G. A. R.
Gov. James P. Goodrich and Mayer Charles W. Jewett today issued separate proclamations calling on the residents of Indianapolis to list rooms in their homes for the housing of *he thousands of persons who are expected here for the annual national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, Sept 19 to 25. i At least 50,000 rooms in private homes will be required for the week of the encampment. Headquarters for the listing of rooms has been established in 701 Chamber of Commerce building. Gov. Goodrich’# proclamation is as follows : Whereas, the Grand Army of the Republic has seen fit to honor the state of Indiana and the city of Indianapolis with its presence for the week of Sept. 19 to 25, 1920; and whereas, the service these men rendered to the fedral government In its time of need was of such a high order than it can not and will not be forgotten. Therefore. I, James P. Goodrich, governor of the state of Indiana, do hereby urge the citizens of the city of Indianapolis to extend such a heartfelt welcome to these men that they will know by our actions that the memory of their deeds in those dark days from '6l to '63 e still fresh in our minds and hearts: furthermore do I hereby urge that every resident of the city of Indianapolis make available a place for one or two persons to live during the week of the encampment here. Mayor Jewett's proclamation is as follows: Whereas, the fifty-fourth annual national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic will be held in Indianapolis from Sept. 19 to 25. be it remembered that mauv of the visitors to thi encampment represent the rapidly thinning ranks of those men who so willingly went fotward and offered their lives that those who came after them might live as men should live. Inasmuch as these men will honor us with their presence here Sept. 19 to 23 no honor or courtesy which we, as a city and individually, can extend to them can equal their unselfish service in the nation's hour of need. Therefore, I. Charles W. Jewett, mayor oi the city or Indianapolis, as a matter of civic pride and as evidence of our devotion to these men, do hereby call upon the residents of the city of Indianapolis to open their homes for the comfort of the visitors duriDg the week the encampment is held. It is altogether fitting and proper that every resident in the city, insofar as it is possible, make available one room each for tha visitors . An official blank is printed in The Times today which residents are urged to use in listing of rooms.
