HEROINESj WEAR PAJAMAS AND BATHING SUITS In This Week's Movies of Comedy, Thrills and Grim Drama

The pajama and the bathing suit is running a close race for the prevailing costume in this week's movies. The bathing suit is on view In Robert IV. Chambers’ “The Fighting Chance,” row at English's. Gorgeous pajamas are the prevailing garments in that gijy farce, “Parlor, Bedrom and Bath,” at the Ohio. Mary Miles Mlnter, at the Colonial, in “A Cumberland Romance,” sticks to simple gowns. Charlie Ray wears a dress suit In “Homer Comes Home,” at the Alhambra, while Bull Montana, as a giant gorilla, >s quaintly attired In “Go and Get It,” at the Circle . -I- -I- -IYOU READ IT, NOW SEE IT. New Y'ork’s “400” set. with all Its follies, its shams and unhappiness, forms the background of the screen version of “The Fighting Chance,” based on the novel of the same namG by Robert W Chambers, at English's this week. The story centers around the struggle of Stephen Slward, last descendent of u long line of alcoholic ancestors, *o overcome his weakness for strong drink and win for his wife a charnllng society girl, Sylvia Landis, played by Anna Q. Nilsson. Sylvia Landis Is engaged to Howard Quarrier, but realizing that she loves Slward instead, determines to break with Quarrier. in the meantime Quarrier, discovering I Sylvia’s growing Interest in Siward, de--1 termlnes to crush the man financially I and engineers a financial deal that would ■ have been the ruin of Slward had not i Beverly Plank, a western millionaire, >tepped in and championed Slward'* cause. Siward. feeling he hasn't even a “fighting chance" to win the heart of Sylvia, has yielded to his old enemy, the demon rum, and is in a bad way when Plank braces him up. Plauk has fallen In lve with the wife of Leroy Mortimer, a man broken both financially and spiritually, and who makes his living blackmailing members of the set to which he belongs. The big climax comes when Siward. fully master of his weakness, and Plank, having beaten Quarrior In the financial battle, takes Sylvia and Mortimer’s wife to dine at the Riverside Inn. Quarrier, hearing of the arrangement, gets hold of Mortimer, who, as usual, is desperately in need of funds, and promises him money if he will go to the inn and create a scene. At the inn Mortimer tells Quarrier he once saw Siward coming from Sylvia’s room at midnight, and Qfcarrler, becoming enraged, knocks him down. Mortimer shoots Quarrier and in turn is shot himself by Quarrier as be falls dead. The part of Stephen Slward It handled in a very creditable manner by _onrad Nagel. Dorothy Davenport is Mortimer's wife and other important members of the cast are Bertram Grassby and Clarence Burton. The picture is delightful to the feminine eye chiefly because of the large number of gorgeous costumes worn by the principals in the cast. Opinion: An excellent photoplay for those who like pictures dealing with New Y'ork society. Photography: Good as a whole, but | slightly spoiled by the injection of color in the final close-up. Direction: Above the average. -!- -I- -IMCSICAL ACT At THE BROADWAY. Hays and Baldwin offer songs and piano selections as ' their offering at the Broadway this week. *• •- Another feature of aHH t * le ls 'lafcaF’na’s • Hawaiian*, a native actalking banjo; “The | Janitor's Harem.” a D* comedy, and a Mutt Jllss Baldwin. and Jeff movie comedy. -I- -ITHRILLS AND MORE THRILLS AWAITS YOU AT THE CIRCLE. This department has received several letters imploring the writer to let them know when a real thrilling movie came to town. We meet the obligation and say it loudly—go to the Circle this week and see ‘‘Go Get It.” • I There are enough thrills in this movie to supply the entire family and also nicely mixed right up with the thrills j are some delicious comedy scenes. The comedian ls our freckled-faced friend, Wesley Barry, and in this movie he has a chance to prove that he Is a genuine funmaber. The thriller is Bull Montana, who plays the role of a gorilla, who suddenly j becomes murederous after the brain of a criminal is grafted into the animal's ; brain. The love Interest is prettily supplied ,by Pat O'Malley as Kirk Connelly, a' newspaper reporter, and Agnes Ayres as a mysterious woman reporter, who turns out to be the owner of the paper on which Kirk is employed. Then there are some wonderful aero-

Fine for Skin Exposed to Sun or Flying Dirt

These days the face needs •pecial care and attention. Flying dust and dirt the beating sun. are severe on any skin. Their despoiling effects are best overcotm bv the application of pure mereollzed wax This keeps skin and pores in a cleanly condition, the complexion beautibully white and spotless. Reddened, tanned, freckled or roughened cuticle i actually absorbed by It. One ounce oi mercolired wax, obtainable at any drug store is sufficient to completely renovate a soiled complexion. It is used like cold cream allowed to remain on over night, and washed off in the morning. Fine lines and even the deeper wrinkle* often appear at this season. In sucu cases nothing Is better than a face bath made by dissolving an ounce of pure powdered saxolite in a half pint witch hazel. This is remarkably effective.—Advertisement.

RUTH HAS A MERRY TUMBLE IN MOVIE

Here ls Ruth Stonehouse in a very unconventional tumble during the rapid funmaking in the farce, “Parlor, Bedroom and Bath,” now at the Ohio. Miss Stonehouse wears some cute pajamas In a very ladylike manner, but

KAY IS IMMENSE IN “HOMER COMES HOME.” Again we are taken to a country town. And we have Charles Ray as our guide. This time we go to Mainsville, where Homer Cavander tries to make tome of his “big Ideas" work. , Os course, Charles Ray Is this same Homer, and he plays the leading role In “Homer Comes Home." “Homer Comes Home” is another of those natural, appealing stories that have given Ray distinction in his delineations of country boys. This story, however, 1* unlike his previous efforts In many ways. He has a much harder time of it aa Homer than ever before, for Homer 1* an almost pitiable youngster, who Is kicked from one Job to another. But later In the story Ray has a chance I to get in some excellent comedy. And along with the comedy, there Is the interest of watching the development of the young country lad. Ray has a character here that would be hard to duplicate for appeal and humor. And back of the whole story in the famous atmosphere of the country town that is lndlspensible In a Ray picture. The generous and the mean, the haughty nnd the humble, and the whole conglomeration that makes up the public and sentiment of a little town, all are In this picture. And Ray is his own wholesome self. Opinion: A good Ray story, good direction nnd photography, and excellent work by Ray and his cast. Will be shown at the Alhambra today, Tuesday and Wednesday. -i- -iOUR MARY 18 DAUGHTER OF A MOONSHINER IN THIS MOVIE. Riding a cow to market may not 1A very comfortable, but Mary Miles Mlnter accomplishes it. She rides “bossle” In “A Cumberland Romance,” in wjilch she is the daughter of a moonshiner of the highlands. Not Tery easy, you will say, but then

INDIANA DAILY TIMES, MONDAY, AUGUST 9, 1920.

she just had to take a tumble off of a chair In this movie farce. And Ruth waa wearing her famous pajnmes at tbo time of the tumble, as the picture shows. It’s a gay movie and good fun, very good fun.

Mary slips back to the primitive in this picture, now at the Colonial. She churns butter, outsboots the best of the mountaineers, and does hundreds of things that the average play does not require. The leading man ls an Indiana man, Monte Blue. He ls cast as a preacher of the mountains tvho is In love with the girl. Then Into the story comes an easterner, Clayton, who becomes infatuated with the beautiful girl. The story revolves around the chivalry of the natives and of the easterner. Localities for the outdoor scenes were well chosen, and the picture gives a big glimpse of the rough nnd healthy life of the mountaineers of William Fox, Jr„ and Charles Neville Buck. Miss Winter is very good as Easter Hicks, who thinks that she loves th* “fiirriner” nnd admits her infatuation. She and Monte Blue give to the production the convincing air that it has, that makes it seem to belong to all outdoors. Opinion: A picture that is filled with the wonder of nature, with a good story, and good, convincing acting by Miss Mlnter and Monte Blue. -I- -|- AT THE MURAT.
