COUNCIL HEAD GETS ‘PEEVED’ Doesn’t Want Assistance in Buying Apparatus. If the city council recovers its dignity nnd gets peevishness directed at Dwight S. Ritter, city purchasing agent, it will likely go ahead with the program of motorizing the hre department of the city. Gustave Schmidt, president, of the council, called Ritter on the -‘green carpet - ’ a'few days ago and wanted to know why Ritter had sent out a letter to a number of firm who had Are apparatus to sell, telling their representatives not to call on the president of the couu i'tt and the members of the board of safety, until they should, get word from Ritter President Schmidt said that neither he nor the other officials wished to l>e ignored in such a way and asked what Mr. Ritter meant by it. Mr. Ritter explained that inasmuch as no bond issue' habeen arranged and the city was not ready to buy motor equipment, he thought he would be doing the overworked city officials a good turn by keeping the motor equipment salesrften away from them until such a time as the city would be actually ready
to buy. At such time. Mr. Ritter explained in his letter, he would advise the salesmen to see the officials and thus nobody would get the.bulge on the other and the. city play no favorites. "Well your explanation doesn't explain,” was the substance of President Schmidt's retort. Whereupon Mr. Ritter wrote a letter—which President Schmidt O. K.'d—and sent to all the firms to whom he had sent the first letter. The answers are now dribbling in and the tenor of them is that the salesmen understood the letter to mean that they were not to bother the council and other officials until the proper time. Thus, the dignity of tne council will probably be saved and the city will eventually get the motor apparatus. The estimated cost of motorizing the

Mrs. John Bennett reported to the police Sunday that thieves had broken Into the apartment' and stolen the Bennett jewels. Wheal Mr. Bennett returned home he was not long in clearing up the mystery. He had fbund the jewels lying loose on a dressing table and to frighten Mrs. Bennett had hidden them under a blanket.
