SCHOOL EMPLOYE LET GO BY BOARD Superintendent of Buildings Does Not Know Why.
George H. Riekes. superintendent' of publle school buildings and grounds, who was relieved of his job by the board of school commissioners, will leave the service without knowing just why he was relieved. Xtickes appeared before the board last night with his resignation in hand, but desired to know why he was dismissed before he presented It. lie was told that it “for the of the service," and with this he had to be content. Hopes that the action of the board might be reconsidered were dashed when it got in action. Riekes will continue on the Job until A tig. 1. He was given two weeks' pay in lieu of a vacation which was due him. The board would uot say whether Carl Burton would succeed Riekes. although be has bee; appointed as assistant superintendent Board jurinbers said last night tt-at Riekes’ successor would not t3 named until a full membership of the board was present. William IV Allison, a member, was not present, being out, of the city. President Crippeu of the board said that a number of applicants for Riekes' place was under consideration. Among the candidates is James Twvman. a brick contractor, who is said to have the Indorsement of Allison. The board took occasion to dismiss Joseph Tullls, shop clerk; Charles Douglass, carpenter foreman; Bruce Taylor, carpenter, and William Towers, bricklayer. The only reason for the dismissal of the four was the same as in Riekes' ease —“good of the service." It is said that the four men were in sympathy with Riekes. The board has under consideration a request of the Grand Army of the Republic that schools be dismissed during the week of the annual encampment in Indianapolis.
