July 13.—A hot fight between Harding and Cox over the farmer vote has been started by the senator’s nominee's stinging retort to the announcement by Gov. Cox that he favors a “real dirt" farmer for secretary of agriculture. It is the first bomb shell Harding has fired Into the Cox camp and promises to set off a lively shower of fireworks. Harding’s statement declared that the republicans had kept a “real farmer" in office as secretary of agriculture for sixteen years continuously until the democrats came into power and appointed a university president to the post. He referred to “Uncle Jim" Wilson of lowa, who was secretary of agriculture under McKinley, Roosevelt and Taft, and was succeeded by David S. Houston, then president of Washington university, St. Louis, recently succeeded by E. T. Meredith, a publisher. The high cost of living problem would have been solved In advance had the republican policies In relation to the department of agriculture been carried on, Harding said. Harding expected to work on his speech all day, hoping to make up for time lost when he was engaged in conference with party leaders. There was apparent disappointment at Harding headquarters over the refusal of Gov. Clement of Vermont to call the legislature into special session to ratify the woman’s suffrage amendment “I had hope! he would do it," Harding said when the news was brought to him.

RUSSIAN TROOPS OCCUPY MINSK Soviets Take Strategic Points on Russo-Poiish Front. LONDON, July IS,—The Russians have occupied the important city of Minsk on the northern end of the Russo-Poiish battle front, according to a soviet communiqne wirelesssed from Moscow today. Minsk Is about 255 miles northeast of Warsaw. It lies at the junction of two strategic railway lines, one of which runs from Moscow to Warsaw. The Russian communique claimed also the capture of the two strategic cities of Molodetcbno and Sventslany, both of which were the scene of violent battles between the Austro-Germans and Russians in the world war. It was reported that the Poles had lost the fortress of Brest-Lltovsk, where the Russian bolshevik! and the Germans signed their peace treaty, but this was denied at the Polish legation. Brest-Litovsk is only ninety miles from Warsaw, the Polish capital. The advance of the Russians south of Dvinsk probably will compel the immediate evacuation of that fortress city by the Poles. Latest advices from the eastern war theater puts the Polish line through Sventsiany, Vileika, Minsk, west of Bobruisk (where the Russians forced their latest crossing on the Bereslna river), through Ovrutsh. west of Esarny, through the fortress of Rovno, through Obtrogand and Proskirov, thence to the Roumanian frontier. It is now reported that Gen. Brussiloff is not commanding the Russian red armies, but a military genius has arisen in the ranks of the bolshevikl. The new commander is described* as Comrade Tovgachewski, aged 21, who led the first army which defeated the forces of Gen. Deinikin and Admiral Kolchak. Lithuanian troops are reported mobilizing for an attack on the Poles, In accordance with an agreement signed by Lithuania and the Russian soviet government, according to a newspaper 'disputch from Kovna today.

READ THE BOOK And See the Play at the Murat This Week TEMPERAMENTAL HENRY By SAMUEL ME R WIN Talk about temperament! No petted prima donna was ever in it with Henry. Complexity is an inadequate word when you come to Henry’s character. To make him consistent in his inconsistencies is an achievement that ought to bring his creator the Victoria Cross. And the girl is one of the best girls in all fiction. She is the real thing, if any book ever got the real thing down on paper. You know every man, woman and child in the story; know that they are real, and that if they haven’t lived outside the pages of the hook they certainly live in them. The humor chuckles in every page, and bubbles and overflows to an astonishing extent. Further adventures of Henry Calverly are to be found in HENRY IS TWENTY and THE PASSIONATE PILGRIM.
