Is one of the many condition! whlh are found every day In the foreign district of Indianapolis, according to Miss Helene H. Stephens, director of the work of the Cosmopolitan Chapel, 511 West 'Maryland street. Miss Stephens cited another Instance where the father and four small children are living In one room in a very insanitary condition. CITES INSTANCES OF WORK ACCOMPLISHED. “A short time ago when I was coming to work I saw a little girl lying In the street who was very dirty in addition to being insufficiently clothed,” said Miss Stephens.

"Tbe Boy Scent organisation had a membership of fifteen this spring. “Our Sunday school class has ah attendance regularly of not lass than thirty each Sunday afternoon.” A nursery for the babies is another feature of the association’s work. From thirty to forty babies of a half a dozen nationalities mingle at thla nursery every day. Under the direction ot Miss Stephens a five weeks' vacation school is being conducted this summer. SUBJECTS TAUGHT IN VACATION SCHOOL. Children from 4 to 13 years arc enrolled. They are taught sewing, cooking and are told Bible stories. They will be given a number of picnics. In discussing her wjork in the district Miss Stephen* said she has found the people very pleasant to deal with and willing to receive help. “They are always very grateful, and consider it a great honor to kias the person who helps them,” she said. “Wo have found that they are very impatient, wanting a thing doDe at once. “This is shown in the children who require constant amusement, and can not he kept still a minute.” In talking of her experiences with the foreign women, Miss Stephens said that the women do not take instruction as well as the men because they do not have the opportunity to learn English which tho men have In their work, and because they have always been held down by the customs of the old country. Their home duties also make it next to impossible for them to attend tbe night school. “We often have the children say funny thing* to us," said Miss Stephens. “One of our workers heard one little tot ask another-- who was boss at the chapel and he told the questioner that

A. during the war. “Many of ths-m hold well-paid positions in dSJTerent trades.” GIRL LED TO JAIL BY VANITY LURE BOSTON, July B.—Love of fine clothes, high life and Jewelry, it Is alleged, led to th* arrest of Mrs. Phoebe DeSlmons Philips, a yeoman (F) at tho Harvard radio achool during the war, and daughter of an East Boston bnslIneas man, charged with forgery and the larceny of $1,750 from her employers. Mrg. Philips la 23 years old, divorced, and has a son 3 years old. The police claim they recovered costly lingerie and other clothing, Including a SSOO fur scarf and a SIOO platinum ring In a room occupied by Mrs. Philips. According to the officers the youngwoman was employed by th# Columbia Coffee Company for several months previous to March, when, It is alleged, she committed her first theft from the firm. She was sent to the bank with a blank check which she was to fill out for $129 on hbr arrival, according to tbe police, and it Is alleged she filed In the amount for $229, keeping the SIOO and returning the balance to her employer.
