The hearing on the alleged discriminatory freight rates charged Indiana shippers to St. Paul, Minneapolis and other points in the northwest has adjourned indefinitely in order that Indiana. Illinois and Missouri railways and the trunk lines running out of Chicago into the northwest may have time to prepare their defense. The hearing, which was conducted before W. B. Pattison, special examiner of the interstate commerce commission, started Tuesday and ended late yesterday with the closing of the evidence for the petitioners by A. B. Cronk, freight rate expert for the Indiana public servic® commission, and K. B. Coapstick, traffic manager for the Indiana state chamber of commerce. Continuation or the case was due to an amendment in the allegation of the petitioners, which took in a consideration of the rates on a long list of commodities. RESCLT OF HOOSIER ACTIVITY. The hearing was the direct result of investigations made by the'lndiana state chamber of commerce and the Indiana public service commission on the ratio of freight rates from points in Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. These organizations filed complaints with the interstate commerce commission alleging that Illinois and Missouri manufacturers received a better rate to St. Paul, Minneapolis and other cities of the northwest, cities the Indiana manufacturers say is the natural market for their manufactured products. Evidence in the hearing showed that in some cases Indiana shippers were bucking a discriminatory rate of 50 per eent against shippers and manufacturers of Illinois and Missouri cities of practically equal distances from Minneapolis and St. Paul. INDIANA ASKS BATE LOWERING. - Indiana manufacturers are petitioning for either the lowering of rates charged Indiana manufactun rs and shippers or the raising of the rates charged Illinois and Missouri shippers and manufacturers. Contestants on the raising of the Illinois and Missouri rates represented St. Louis. East St Louis, Quincy, Peoria and other manufacturing centers in that territory. The date for the continuation of the bearing will be set by the interstate commerce commission. Among other witnesses examine*! during the hearing were C. W. Chupman. Prince, Advance-Rumely Company. Laporte, Ind.; William M. Young. Xordyke & Mannon Company. Indianapolis, and John C. Fox. Highland lr,n and Steel Company, Terre Haute, Ind. MAN ATTEMPTS BCICIDE. James Brown. 25, of 925 North Alabama street, took poison last night. Physicians at the City hospital say he may recover. The police did not learn why Brown drank the poison.
