Latest Dance Modes Scored by Editor LONDON, June 11.—The modem ballroom is run on “Soviet principles, says P. J. S. Richardson, editor of the Dancing Times. He wants to cut the bolshevism. ‘ln the old days dances In which everybody was doing the same step at the same time were popular.” he said. ‘The majority of the people today Insist In dancing as they like. ‘‘For the sake of general comfort I’m convinced that something must be done to standardize dance steps. "We’ve swung from autocracy to bolshevism. “Sidestepping and too much hesitating over the hesitation are throwing everybody in everybody else's way. It holds np the traffic. “These extra steps are innocent In themselves, but they are really stage or acrobatic steps." He has called a conference of dancing teachers and will try to standardize dancing.
Public’s to Blame for Cost of Shoes WASHINGTON, June 11.—Fastidious tastes of the public are partly responsible for present high shoe prices, 'Wiltllam McAdoo, Jr.. New York. Tice president of the Central Leather Company, declared before the senate committee investigating shoe prices. He denied that his company was making exorbitant profits, but said its profits la lftlfi were $13,288,451. compared with $4,876,923 t n 1914. Mr. McAdoo said that because of “a marked decline” in the demands of shoe manufacturers for leather, his company had reduced prodnctlin from 10 to 20 per cent the last three weeks, but added no further reductions were anticipsted if transportation and financial conditions became nearer normal. They’re Payin’ Real ‘Kale’ on Rhine Now COBLENZ, Germany, June 11.—The American doughboys on the Rhine were brought to earth with a hard thud from their fairy-tale life in a profiteer's para dise when Cnele Sam started this month paying off In American dollara Instead of marks or francs. Previously one had to show an order from the United States to get dollars from the quartermaster. No longer does the bnck private show his contempt for Herr Errberger's overworked printing presses by lighting his dgarets with a fifty-mark note. With “regular money" In his khaki pockets his Yankee thrift has returned. Fifty, or oven 1,000 ‘marks didn't amount to much, anyway. . But the American greenback; Well, that’s different. The doughboy has begun to patronlae the postal money order counter In the army postoffice, and his former rigs ret elighters are going Into the home bank. • REPAIRING AM tMRKEI.LV Mechanically simple as an umbrella Is, It must generally be taken all apart to repair a broken rib or stretcher, and the task is beyond’ most owners, says Popular Mechanics Magazine. DOUGHBOYS FIND FRENCHJOBSSHY Former Soldiers To'ld Not to Make Trip Now. PARIS, June 10.—Large numbers of former American soldiers, finding conditions in America unsatisfactory, are returning to France. Finding vork for them in this country Is quite a serious problem for American Legion officials here. Some of the ex-soldiers have taken places as laborers at comparatively small wages, and legion officials say that “doughboys” should be warned not to return'to France unless well provided with money to defray expenses while finding jobs, which are quite scarce at present “Since early in March,” said Arthur W. Kiplng, adjutant of the Paris post, American Legion, “there has been a steady stream of discharged American officers and soldiers coming to France. “Many of these men are without money, they have small prospects of finding work and their knowledge of the French language Is rudimentary. “The legion has been forced to organize an employment service, which has succeeded In finding places for ninetyfive men in tbe last forty days. “The return of Americans to France under present conditions is Inadvisable.” CHAIN CABLE. The total length of chain cable tested during 1918 19 at the public proving houses in the United Kingdom, all of which are under the superintendence of Lloyd's register of shipping, was 599,094 fathoms, and a quantity of miscellaneous chains and sample*. The number of anchors tested was 9,783.
