Today’s Market Gossip
11!y Thomson i McKinnon) STOCKS—Ordinary fluctuations In a pre-holiday market would be without significance, but considering existing conditions and the pessimistic sentiment that has prevailed, the stability displayed today means something. It means that liquidation has run its course; that traders now are more anxious to buy than sell. Looking forward we can see a better flay for the railroads. For many years railroad opponents have had a great weapon in the cry of watered stock. The recent valuation removes the foundation for such a claim. We might as well object lo rentals because they are not. in line with the valuation of property twenty years ago. It is unthinkable that the bonus bill in its present form will become a law, although it no doubt will be adopted by the house. This will give us an unsettled market for a few days and offer Intending buyers an opportunity to acquire some stocks at concessions. Incidental to the stock dividend of 150 tier cent by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, an offering of $30,000,1)00 capital stock will be made. $10,000,010 of which will be common and $20,000,000 preferred. Accumulated surplus of $43.ooo.qoo was responsible for the stock distribution. Swift A- Cos. declared the regular quarterly dividend of $2 a share. The ChP-ago A Northwestern railroad will sell $15,000,000 first refunding 6s at not below 90. The commonwealth Edison Company of Chicago will sell $.5,000,000 7 per cent collateral gold notes at 92%. The company also will sell $7,143,000 first ss. Hradstreets says; Conditions are still highly Irregular, with varying degrees of quiet activity noted in different lines. A more sober feeling prevails in the mercantile and industrial situation. GRAIN—A private cable nays that Argentina intends to heavily increase the export tax on wheat. Members of the New York Produce Exchange hold a meeting to ascertain the ettitude respecting the opening of futnie trading in wheat. A vote taken favored resumption of wheat trading July 1 in contracts ''ailing for delivery not before Sept. 1. This opinion will be forwarded to the subcommittee headed by L. F. Gates of Chicago, who are collecting opinions on this subject. COMMODITY EXCHANGES CLOSED. NEW YORK, May 29.—The cotton. sugAr and coffee exchanges were closed today.

CHICAGO, May 29 —There was a rapid ris-' in corn at today's opening, with pit shorts and commission houses competing for offerings. Starting prices were steady to 3 cent* higher, with July leading the advance. A general rush to buy and a scarcity of offerings caused oats to open steady to 1% cents higher. Provisions started easier, with a little scattered selling and small demand. Grain futures closed weak to strong on the Chicago board of trade today. May corn was off lc, with July and September up fractionally. The market opened strong on reports that the Argentine government had suspended all loadings of wheat. Later there was considerable selling when the report was credited as a custom house error in interpreting a government decision to increase taxation on exportation of wheat from Argentine.
