CITES BIG PROFITS IN TAX DEFENSE Congressman Shows There Is No Reason for ‘Pinch/ WASHINGTON, Mar 26.—War profits of corporations after paying heavy war taxes were 75 per cent greater than the average peace-time business returns just before the war. Representative -Hull, Tennessee, one of the flanrial experts of congress, declared In a statement today. The corporate net Income of the country remaining after payment of all income, excess and war profits taxes from 1916 to 1920 inclusive, is more than tlilrty-four billion dollars, or an average of seven billion dollars a year, said Hull, while the corresponding net income remaining for the years 1912, 1915 rnd 1914 averaged but slightly ovpr four billion dollars, and these latter were not Lad business years." Hull, a democrat, cited the figures as a defense for the excess profits taxes. Urging greater government economy, null estimated that during the nex twenty-five years $700,000,000 annually will be p3id to the service men in insurance, compensation, pensions, etc.
PUPILS PORTRAY HISTORY OF CITY Brilliant Pageants Staged in School Yards. A pageant made up of sixteen episodes of the history of Indianapolis was presented this afternoon by the pupils of the Thomas D. Gregg public school No. 15. at the school. Earliest and latest school life was portrayed by the first grade pupils; pioneer 'social life, by the second grade; a. winter evening in an old-time home and early modes of travel, by the third grade; “Lighting up the Century,” by the fourth grade; sanitation and advancement of health, by the fifth grade; log cabin and modern days, by the sixth grade; development of commerce, by the seventh grade. The finale was a brilliant portrayal of the four leading episodes of the history of the city. They include the coming of the first settler to Indianapolis, the civil war period, Indiana governors and the world war. Garfield school on Madison avenue and Raymond street also gave a festival on the school grounds under the direction of the teachers. An elaborate pageant was presented by the Emerson school in Ellenberger woods yesterday afternoon. The life of Indianapolis from her first birthday to the one hundredth was shown in a succession of brilliant living pictures, acted out by the children of the school. A particularly effective feature was the picturing of the “Rainbow of Promise” showing a glimpse into the promising future of the city. Mrs. Herbert Adkinson. pianist, furnished the music interpolated into certain scenes. Miss Kate Mason, principal, assisted by the teachers, conceived the idea of the pageant and carried it through.
Eergdoll Reward Increased SI,OOO WASHINGTON, May 26.—Additional reward of $1.00) for information resulting in the capture of Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, wealthy slacker, who recently escaped from his guards at Philadelphia, was offered today by his Washington counsel. Samuel T. Ansell, former judge advocate general, and Edward S. Bailey. This was In addition to the rewards totalling $2,500 previously offered. Attorneys Ansell and Bailey sharply criticised the department of justice in reply to an announcement from Attor-ney-General Palmer's office that the latter had information as early as April 30, of a plot for Bergdoll to get bail and then jump It. CROKER REFUSES TO FORGIVE SON One Charge He Won't Forget ‘While He Lives' WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., May 26. Richard Croker having testified today that his response lacked defiulteness because memonrauda was In a safety deposit box, which he was enjoined from opening, the opposing counsel suggested a modification of the injunction and production of the memoranda and other papers. Croker’s counsel objected. Ignoring his attorneys Croker turned to Judge Donnell and said: “You know you are not proposing this to help me. Go ahead with the examination. "I am willing to stand the torture. "I am not playing the baby act. "The injunction will stand just as It is until we have selected the whole thing." Judge Donnell held that ns Croker did not want the injunction modified no order would be made. Father and son touched elbows in court, but did not exchange glances. MASONS END 99TH ANNUAL SESSION Meeting Closes With Visit to Franklin Home. Visits to the Masonic homo at Franklin and the discussion of business matters closed the ninety-ninth annual state meeting of the Grand lodge of Free and Accepted Masons today. According to the report of the grand master, Charles J. Orblson, read at the opening session of the meeting, the lodge membership has increased 10,022 in the past year, bringing the total up to 98.170 In the state. The report showed that during the year six new temples were dedicated. Following the regular advancement of officers, the following were named: Richard H. Scheltzer, Knlghtstown, grand master; Omar B. Smith, Rochester, deputy grand master; Robert W, Phil lips, Richmond, senior grand warden; Charlea A. I.tppineott, South Bend, junior grand warden. Frank E. Gavin and Calvin W, Prather. Indianapolis, were reelected grand treasurer and grand secretary, respectively.
