WOMEN ACTIVE AT CONVENTION (Continued From Page One.) M. B. Lairy were among the prominent democratic women seated on the stage. Not only are women working and watching, but they were also “boosting.” In the lobby a group of well-known women are selling small gold roosters suspended on black cords. “If you are a democrat buy an emblem and crow about It,” Is tbeir slogan. Mrs. D. C., Brennan is in charge of the emblem sale, assisted by Mrs. W. B. Blodgett, Mrs. W. C. de Miller, Mrs. Thomas Wright and Miss Josephine Woolling. THEY SHOW KEEN INTEREST IN TALKS. An active interest was 6hown by the women in the speeches on party principles. The announcement of Mrs. Alice Foster McCulloch as one of the “big four,” brought a burst of applause from the feminine listeners. Tb’e fact that the women were mainly present at the opening of the session and show no tendency to miss anything is sufficient proof that the democratic women are absolutely “arrived” when it comes to politics. Undertakers Oppose Sunday Funerals The Indiana Funeral Directors’ association, at tis closing session at the Hotel Severin today, took action regarding Sunday funerals and decided to discourage them. The question was brought up by F. P. Martin, Terre Haute undertaker, who said Sunday funerals had been abolished in his city. Ft. Wayne and Gary have taken similar steps. The purpose in doing away with burials ou Sunday is to give pastors, undertakers and cemetery employes an opportunity for one day’s rest. Clyde E. Titus, Indianapolis, is the new president of the association. He is of the 'well-known firm of Hisey & i Titus. The other officers elected were: First vice president, Walter Day, Bedford; second vice president, O. M. Davies, Marshall; secretary, W. F. Evans, Brownsburg; treasurer, Frank Voss, Seymour ; delegates to national convention", J. A. Coding, Attica; George M. Com. ley, Lebanon; C. H. Schultze, Oaktown; William Moore, Brasil; O. W. LEAGUE TO HELP IRISH—TAGGART (Continued From Page One.) with us the glory our labors have made possible. “But, democrat as I am, I am not, if elected, going to the senate to servo partisan purpose, but to serve my state and the American people to the best of my ability. WILL BE GLIDED BY EIGHT AND WRONG. “I shall go there to play no favorites, but to do what I believe to be just and right. “I shall Insist that women be recognised and having every right men have, and one right man do not have —the right to be protected <fey men. “I shall treat as fairly the poor man as I do the rich man and guard as sacredly the coustUtitional rights of the colored man as I do the rights of the white man. "Justice and right are the pillars of our government, and If these principles are not respected and uphefd by this government, soon or later, mob rule will destroy both capital and labor. “X believe In capital and I believe In labor. “They are both Indispensable to the welfare of society. “But I sometimes think that there are times when they are both open to criticism for not being more appreciative of the relation that should exist between them. “Absolute reconciliation between tbeße two great factors of society must be brought about and it will be my ambition, if elected, to do my part in establishing harmony and confidence between them. “I want to see capital make a fair profit and be safeguarded in its property rights; and with equal zeal do I want to see labor have a fair wage—a wage sufficiently large to give a competence on which to live and to educate Its children, without experiencing a sense of humiliation, and to lay aside, by observing the prudent rules of life, something for a rainy day. MUST BE -ALERT TO NEEDS OF NATION. “Until this condition can be broughtabout, bolshevism will increase and law and order will be threatened. “And you will agree with me that the red flag must never have a place in our sky. "To prevent this destructive emblem from acqulrihg a permanent place In our country we must be alert to the nation s needs. “Let us destroy the disturbing agitator by having in this country more efficiency, more honesty, more fair dealing, more cooperation, more production aud a better conception of what ‘live and let live' means. “We are passing through a period demanding at every turn constructive legislation. “I submit to you that the republican majority in congress has not met the situation. .“It has done nothing to Justify the people into thinking that congress should remain republican. “Its conduct proves the wisdom of the president lu asking for a congress of his party faith that would be in sympathy with him. "How different things would be in the world today if his request had been granted. "No party has ever had the opportunity to render a higher class of service to this country than the republican party has had In eongress since the close of the war, but it has absolutely wasted its time and neglected its duty, while the country became more and more restless, and economic and social conditions grew wo Me. be accomplished unless a different class of men are elected to the senate, who will give more thought to the interest of the country then they do to politics. “Our party can be counted on to deal intelligently and effectively with every great question affecting society. “It has to its credit the most constructive record of any party in the history of this country. “It has had to deal with the biggest problems of civilization. “When other countries did not know which way to turn in the greatest war of all times, this- country, under the leadership of the greatest man of his generation, President Wilson, pointed out the way to victory. “Whenever he wrote or spoke on a war topic his message was universally acquiesced in, in this country, and mea and women of every rank Joined in sayinjg he represented their sentiments and spoke their convictions, and this showed how wisely he interpreted the thought of his countrymen. “Is It not a shame then that in his own country a conspiracy has been organized to deny him the credit due him for services he has rendered mankind, as well as to destroy himV CAN’T UNDERSTAND BIAS OF OPPONENTS. works and self-laudation;. but no one could find it in his heart to approve of anything the president had dorte in helping to win the war. “They could find time to commend men and committees, who have spent more time in nosing around to find some possible mistake the president or his administration made while working under fire to save our nation than they gave to helping win the w3r. “I confess I can not understand how our two United States senators, honored as they were by being privileged to serve their country in this critical period; can find it in their hearts to refuse to speak in words of approval of anything the president dirtv during the war. “Maybe the reason I do not understand the conduct of our two senators is because I have not had much experience as a United States senator. “If that is th’e reason, I hope I will not be sent back to the senate, for I do not want to acquire the disposition of withholding praise for a faithful public servant when praise is dueTiim. “I have never failed to give Gov. Goodrich Just praise for what he and his administration did towards helping to win the war. “I offered resolutions commending them and whenever my heart permits me to deny honor to any one of my fellow citizens who has helped to save my country, I hope it will cease to beat. “There Is a great opportunity in the
senate sor 1 constructive legislation. "In entering this campaign I do so with an open mind and without entangling alliances with or promises to either labor or capital, but with the desire and purpose all parties fairly. "I pledge you, my fellow citizens, that if I am made senator, no matter who the president of the United States may be, I shall support him in everything he undertakes of a non-partisan character on behalf of this country; -- “And I shall positively refuse to withhold from him the honor duo him, even though he be not of my party. “President Wilson, my fellow citizens, h-as made it possible for a wonderful service to b© rendered to the world. “He has made It possible to reduce to a minimum, through the league Os nations, the possibility of war; and I am not in favor of increasing the possibility of war by weakening the league through reservations.” Senators in Favor of Campaign Airing WASHINGTON, May 20.—The Borah resolution calling for a congressional Investigation of campaign expenditures in behalf of presidential candidates was passed by the senate this afternoon without a roll call.
