CALICO REVOLT GETS NO PLACE IN TIIORNTOWN School Board Steps in When Principal and Pupils Draw Lines. *LAW AND ORDER’ RULE By DICK FARRINGTON. Staff Correspondent of The Times. THORNTOWN, Ind-, May 13. Thorn town's dignity stands preserved. In the language of the school hoard, “law and order has triumphed over calico.” Tranquility again prevails where for several days a sinister aspect has caused the very pillars of the snug little school building here to rattie. But tongues are still clacking and it may be several days before the town's brown period is over. The storm broke when sixteen girls of the high school division appeared for classes In calico and gingham house dresses. From accounts there wss an imposing array of “Mother Hubbards'’ and “Billy Burkes.” DIDN'T LIKE IT AND HE SAID SO. The principal of the school didn’t like It one bit. He was outspoken. Bebind the sudden onslaught on the H. C. L. by the sixteen lassies he saw au Insincere effort for frugality -a reflection on his school clean-up program, it is claimed. The cleanup, it appears, came in the form of an old newspaper gathering campaign, the proceeds from the papers which were sold, going into the school fund. It so happened that the boys donned their overalls for the occasion. Some of the .girls’ mothers didn't exactly approve dr the idea of their daughters gathering up newspapers. They were outspoken, too. Then came Friday morning and the girls marched off to school in the house dresses their mothers had carefully prepared. One glance was enough for the principal. He called the calico and gingham sisters to the front of the room. “Go home and put on your regular dresses—stay home if you insist on wearing these, ’ he is alleged to have told them. There was a furore. The girls marched borne, told their mothers what had happened, and STAYED HOME. When they failed to return for the afternoon classes all were summarily expelled. Four of the senior girls, soon to get their diplomas, lost some of their valor later in the day and reported to the principal. They were reinstated when their mothers appealed for them, but the others were out in the cold. *MHEN BOYS TAKE HAND IN AFFAIR. Then came added difficulties. It so happened that there were just sixteen boys who stood loyally behind the girls. "We're going to strike to get ’em back.” the word ran through their ranks. "What’s a school without girls?” All was set for a general walkout Monday when the school board got into action. Russell Spivey, Claude Itiley, Paul Mclntosh, Henry Palmer, Jess Couger and Devon Couger were the leaders in the blue denim faction. THEY FIND SILVER LINING TO CLOID. The girl’s claim the principal's action in expelling them was a severe blow to their characters, but console themselves in the fact that the boys stood by them. Dr. A. C, Spivey, treasurer of the school board, said today that be stood by the action of S. R. Wells, the principal. He asserted that the girls failed to obey his instructions to appear at school in their regular garb and took advantage of his edict that they “stay home if they didn't remove the house dresses.” “The school board acted when the absence of the girls became an act of truancy,'’ Dr. Spivey continued. “I.aw and order must be respected.” He said Mr. Wells had resigned of bis own volition and that C. E. Beck of Berne, Ind., would be the new principal in the fail.

Is charged with shooting with intent to kill Herman Wallace, 30, negro. Wood said Wallace struck him on the head yesterday morning at the Vonnegut storage plant, where they are employed. Later in the day Wood is supposed to have fired seven shots at his alleged assailant. Wallace, who was also arrested, insisted he had been shot seven times when the police caught him. rit Harrison to meet with a committee that is expected to be appointed by the Indiana Society of Architect# this week and take up the question of what can be done toward the appointment of a commission to formulate a state building code for Indiana. The heads of state departments that are directly interested in the matter of public buildings, and who attended the meeting, will be conferred with. Mr. Adams, who was tbe principal speaker of the evening, spoke of the building code in Ohio and how it was formulated. It is a code for the production of the public, and makes it mandatory that all buildings that are to serve as places

of public assembly, including sch#e&houses, shall be approved by the state* board of examiners. Fifty inspectors are employed to we that its provisions are enforced.
