CONVICT GAINS WAY TO LIBERTY DURING STORM Cuts Through Wall of Cell With Needles and Makes Escape. DEED BESTS CARLISLE KaWLET, Wj o., May 7.—Bert Lofton. considered one of the most recalcitrant Inmates of the Wyoming State penitentiary, engineered an escape from the death house more daring and sensational than that staged by “Vanishing Bill Carlisle, the notorious train robber, who eluded armed posses for nearly a month before his recapture. Lofton left the prison sans shoes, stockings and hat, and dad only In thin striped convict garb, while a snowstorm, accompanied by cold high wind raged. William Smith, another convict, escaped with Lofton, but was taken before he got outside the great gray walls of the institution. The lavatory drain enters through a hole In the hard steel wall of the cell, which hole was covered by a sheet of malleable steel. PICKS HUGE LOCK WITH NEEDLE. Against this softer steel covering Lofton laboriously scratched with needles that he had stolen from the prison ahlrt factory. When he became very weary. Smith relieved him at the task. Eventually the needle cut through the softer steel and the plate was separated from the wall of the cell. The convicts tore the pipe apart, removed the plate that had encircled it and crawled through the aperture to a corridor that ted from the death house to the main part of the prison. Still using the needle, Lofton picked the lock of the huge steel door that barred his progress and found himself free of the death cell’s restrictions. Unobserved, Lofton and Smith sealed three tiers of cells and gained access to the prison attic. Breaking the concrete and slats of the roof of the building they emerged into open air on top of the prison building. With a spring blizzard —cutting wind and stinging snow—raging, the pair Jumped from the .oof of the building to the gronnd beL*-, utilizing some bedding obtained In the attic to soften the impact with the frozen ground. HE ESCAPES AS PAL IS CAUGHT. Finding a bar of iron, Lofton bent it into a hook, tied It to a piece of rope and cast the hook to the top of the prisor wall. Climbing the rope. Lofton dropped twelve feet to freedom just as guards arrived a id catured Smith. Immediately news of the prisoner's escape was spread throughout the surrounding country, but from the moment the storm swallowed the hatless, shoeless and stockingless convict no trace of him has been discovered.
