GERMANS FACE REAL PROBLEM Don’t Know What Plea to Put Up at Spa Conference. BERLTN, May 4.—Members of the German cabinet are in a dilemma over the policy to be followed by German’s representatives at the meeting with allied representatives at Spa on May 23, It was learned today from a high official One faction argues that Germany as a nation Is bankrupt and that It would be dishonorable to offer the allies payment of Indemnity or fulfillment of treaty terms which are Impossible. This faction advises that the German representatives lay their cards on the table and prove Germany’s Insolvency. The other faction believes Germany should make an offer of a definite sum, eTen below that expected by the allies, in order to show Germany’s good will and her ardent desire to co-operate with her erstwhile enemies. The German policy Is in a nebulus stage, bnt every indication Is that the allies, and particularly France, will be disappointed at Spa In the actnal amount Germany Is capable of paying. JEWISH COUNCIL NAMES OFFICERS Mrs. Meyer Efroymson Xew Head of Women. Mr' Meyer Efroymson was elected president of the Indianapolis Connell of Jewish Women at the meeting of the organization held yejterday afternoon in the vestry parlors of the temple. Other officers chosen were Mrs. Benjamin Moyer, vice president; Mrs. Lonls Wolf, second vice president; Mrs. Helen Dauby, treasurer; Mrs. Herbert Seiig, recording secretary, and Miss Frances Mazur, corresponding secretary. Mrs. Dauby has been re-elected consecutively for thirteen years. A special guest of the afternoon was Mrs. Leonard Wood, wife of the repub--Ican candidate for president, and Mrs. Harriett Vlttnm, who Is accompanying Mrs. Wood on her trip. Miss Vlttum talked to the club on “Americanization.” Julia Brown Bodine opened the regular program with n violin number, ‘‘lntermezzo.” from “Cavellerla Kusticans.” As an encore she played ‘ Serenade” (Krelsler). Miss Rnth Mossier, voeallt, gave a group of songs Including ‘‘l.lttle Mothr pf Mine" and “Somewhere." Miss Fay Heller gave readings in keeping with the Mothers’ day idea. “Mother and I'oet” (Elizabeth Barret Browning) and “America for Me"-(Henry Van Dyke.) Mrs. Solomon Kiser was the accompanist for the afternoon. Mrs. Richard Lieber read a paper on “God’s Children.” which closed the formal Mother's day program. An informal social hour followed the business meeting.

BRITAIN ANGLES FOR U. S. FAVOR Xew Ambassador Begins *Reign of Cordiality WASHINGTON. May 4.—A vigorous diplomatic counter offensive apparently has been launched to meet the campaign of anti-British propagandists In the United States, whose activities were causing worry to statesmen on both sides of the Atlantic. There were many evidences here today that such a counter stroke is being essayed and to Sir Auckland Geddes. the new British ambassador, has been entrusted the task of leading the fight for America’s good wilL Sir Auckland has been in Washington two weeks. He has made two speeches, issued one long, statement, attended several publlo dinners, visited the capltol and shaken hands with a great number of congressmen, breaking all records for ambassadorial affability. The precincts of the British embassy no longer are forbidden territory to newspapermen and the footmen now bow them in and Sir Auckland himself comes forward with a hearty handshake. The oldest diplomatic attachees In Washington cannot remember sach an atmosphere of cordiality and freedom at any embassy. BATTERED VICTIM OF ROBBER HELD Policemen Seek Third Man After Scene at Hotel. Arthur Pegan, 46, of 715 East Twentyfifth street, was robbed of S4O at the Colonial hotel at 1 o'clock this morning, be told the police. Pegan told Motor Policemen Drlnkut and Bernauer he had been robbed by a man named Johnson, who had escaped. Blood was on his collar and shirt. The police arrested Pegan and Drue Hill. 23, who lives at the Colonial, and are searching for Johnson. Hill, the police say, was In the room where they found Pegan. Charges of disorderly conduct against James Holliwood, 37, a waiter, were dismissed in city court today. Holliwood is alleged to have attempted to break Into the room of Miss Ruth Williams at the Colonial hotel. He was fined $3 and costs for drunkenness.
