4 DEMOCRATS MAKING FIGHT FOR SHERIFF Race Enlivened by Exposures Under Republican’s Administration. REFORM NEEDS SHOWN BflE&Y&r mm > ISeSI m,, Bp&g&g flp’ Man * jmi pi
WILLIAM P SINDLINGER. Conditions at the Marion county jail recently revealed in an investigation by the federal court have served to attract unusual attention to the race for the nomination for sheriff in both parties. Misuse of fees for the feeding of prisoners, the mistreatment of some prisoners and the granting of unusual liberties to others have been frequent under the present “good government" administration the Investigation showed and for this reason candidates for the democratic nomination for sheriff are making active campaigns in the hope of being able to Improve the situation. FOUR DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES IX RACE. There are four candidates in the field for the democratic nomination —William P. Sindlinger, William P. Stuck. Edward E. Mcßride and Willett Alexander Judson. Mr. Sindlinger is making an especially active campaign. He has been speaking at vafious meetings and has declared that ir elected he will clean up the jail and put the office of sheriff on a respectable basis. Mr. Sindlinger is believed to be especially qualified for the office. He is one of the many former service men who are seeking democratic nominations this year, having served eleven months overseas. He has been active in demorratic politics, especially in the Fourth ward, for many years. Mr. Sindlinger is a son of Peter Sindlinger, who was prominent in Marlon county politics having been a candidate for county treasurer in 189 Sand 1000. OTHER CANDIDATES PROMISE CLEAN-IP. Other candidates for the nomination also are promising to clean up the jail and to Improve conditions in the office generally. The democrats believe they have a-i especially good chance to elect a sheriff, as the various republican factions seem to be up in the air over their candidates. "Honest Boh" Miller, the pre-ent sher iff, whose administration of the ffi r was exposed in federal court, started tb race as the candidate of the Jewel. Lemcfce faction. He withdrew after the exposure and the “regular" fnetion centered on George Snider, who started as an anti-Jewett candidate. The antis now seem to be favoring •either Clarence J. I'lrey or Morris P. Moss, the other two republican candidates. Germany Will Give Up Merchant Ships LONDON. April 30. —In reply to a sharp inquiry from the allies, the German government has replied that a large number of merchant ships are ready to be surrendered in compliance with the terms of the peace treaty, according to a news agency dispatch from Berlin to day.
