WHITESIDE AGAIN IN INDIANAPOLIS (Continued From Pajo One.) to bear the name of Charles W. Jewett, mayor of Indianapolis, and the mayor indignantly denied that he had been associated with Whiteside in any way. He declared that his connection with the bond grew out of a minor transaction that took place while he was a member of the law firm of Weyl & Jewett and that he had not been connected in any way with Whiteside while he "burying" the pauper dead. Among the papers In the governor's office Is a letter from James A. Collins, Judge of the criminal court, who sentenced Whiteside. The text of this letter Indicates that an effort is being made or has been made to obtain a commutation of sentence for Whiteside. It says that neither Collins nor Adams would join In recommending a commutation, but that neither has any objection to a "temporary parole.” “Temporary paroles” are not matters of public record. Commutation of sentence cun only be legally accomplished by plac'.ng the papers on the public record In the office of the secretary of state. The explanation of Whiteside's weekend visit to Indianapolis, as given at the governor's office, was that his mother wished him in the city while she underwent an operation at a local hospital, an operation which one of the doctors who wrote a letter In the case said had been postponed for a long period of time. a-. Whiteside Is believed to have gon? back to the reformatory on April 26. His mother's condition is reported to be satisfactory to the physician attending her. It was indignantly denied at the governor’s office that the requeet for a twoweek parole yeas denied because it would have allowed Mr. Whiteaide to participate in the May primaries of the republican party.
